ITs a 2003 MAX SE with 59K miles on it. Manual.
It had 9 owners before this.... .I thought "RED FLAG!" there must have been something wrong.
Can someone chime in on this? I just dont want him to buy a messed up car...... 9 owners... they could have messed with the car....

Pass it up, there will be other 6 speed 03 se's for sale. That's a lot of owners so there has to be something wrong with the car. Unless that's some kind of mistake.

Agreed. If it was a good car, previous owners wouldn't have been so eager to get rid of it. Now if the dealers where the car was bought/traded-in, etc. are showing up as "owners," then I might reconsider.Originally Posted by Maxima9750

he is right... it COULD'VE been inside transactions between dealers... Get a different report and/or check the ownership list on the title and check for the dates.
I've seen titles being passed around in a period of 1 month and that was only transfers between dealers.

How do you know it had 9 previous owners? if you are looking via CarFax, read carefully - they have entries for events where the ownership does not change...
Definitely check that Carfax or Autocheck well. Sometimes it will add owners where like said above was just transfer of title. You'll notice these by the number of days the person owned it. My car had two owners when I bought it with 50k and I was skeptical. 9 just means runs the other way.
9 OWNERS!?!?!? Damn, I wouldn't buy a car that had more than 2 previous owners, unless it had been with immediate friends/family that I knew very well... Definitely double-check the Carfax or get a more detailed report... One dealer here could pull the maintenance history on a Camry I was looking at back in the day.

or you can look at it this way. everytime it was sold, its because they were tired of fixing stuff. so they sell it after they put big money. so after the 9th owner, its good as new!

That definitely raises red flags on that, especially considering the age and mileage of the car. Having that many owner, doesn't sound right. As far as transfer of dealers, that has nothing to do with carfax or carchex, since they only show on report if there is an actual owner of registersation through the DMV or MVD as you call it, that's where it will show up on carfax or carchex, it can list owner, or as company fleet car but not with car dealer unless they are using it as personal or company use, it will show company fleet.

Like several have said, it does not always mean there were 9 owners, but 9 transactions.
1. Nissan Corp
2. Original dealer buys car
3. Dealer #2 bought from orig dealer because customer wanted it and dealer #2 couldnt find anywhere except from another dealer
4. Customer bought it
5. Customer traded in to another dealer
6. Dealer auctions off to a used car dealer
7. New customer buys car from used car dealer
etc. etc. etc.
This happens all the time. Pay for actual CarFax report and check the details of transactions. If it actually shows personal owners more than 5 times, then I'd say red flag. If it's just transactions between dealers and/or auctions/bureas, etc. well ...

Best advice and very true. I see it happen all the time. get the carfax report. It willl tell you the entire history.
do a carfax on it. but i would stay away. youll get burned trying to save a few dollars.
Probably a flood car. Dealers pretty it up and make it seem great, then after a few thousand miles the damage starts showing, and then it gets sold. Run away. And the theory of 9 owners being internal transactions... I doubt it. My carfax showed 1 previous owner when I bought my car, and it had run around between 4 dealers. 9 previous owners means there is something seriously wrong with the car.

This thread cracks me up.
What is the VIN #. Maybe someone can run a vehicle search for your buddy and squash all these assumptions.
My '02 SE only had 2 personal owners. TWO and my CarFax report showed a total of 7, yes "SEVEN" owners. All others were NissanCorp to dealer, then dealers transferring title, then dealer auction transfer, etc. etc.
I have no outstanding issues with my car except the ones I caused on my own. Bought it in April '06 with 59k and it now has 102k miles.

I would not buy because of resell value alone. It would be hard to sell a car that has had that many owners.

yeah, but at least its not
"on my way to 15 posts so here we go!!!"
or
"hahahahaha"
but i think you should check it out before you totally decide not to get it
see how it runs. make sure everything works. and if you're worried about flodding, look under the carpet of the car. it should show if there was flooding cuz i doubt they would expect you to do that OR fix it up cuz it'd be too much hassle for them.
also, see if all the body panels line up, car drives straight, check the engine light at auto parts store (make sure they didn't reset the light right before you got there.
just for starters
