Tranny fluid has metal in it

Hey guys, after I did a drain/fill with my transmission fluid I noticed that there were metal pieces that were drianed out with the old fluid. Is that normal? I also noticed that there are still some on the dipstick when i check the fluid level. I also noticed that there were little pieces of metal on the dipstick of my friends 2002 chevy tahoe with 30,xxx miles on it that he just bought... is it normal to have metal on the dipstick or in the old fluid or should i be scared?

its normal to have a small amount of metal which is why there is a magnet to catch it.

Drop the tranny pan to be sure.

When I was working on swapping a VB from one max to mine, both of our cars had a lot of shavings collected on the magnet which is normal. Didn't see it in bulk. If its shavings that look liquified sorta, I wouldn't worry, but if they are chunks, I'd worry. Drop the pan to be certain and check what has collected in there.

i suggest going to dealership and checkin it out....that's a sign of weak tranny which will eventually cause various types off tranny problems.

Its either from your pressure plates or planetaries, depending on the amount it may be normal or excessive which is a problem.

yeah, that's exactly what i was thinking... i'm not sure how much is excessive, but when i slid my oil pan accross the cement after draining the tranny i could hear a slight clanking sound, and i'm like.. what the hell? it doesnt make that sound when i change my oil... so i took a magnet wand and slid it around in there and i caught a few small pieces.. and when i funneled the old oil into the containers, there were still some pieces left on the bottom of the pan.. i have done a flush since then using the 2 quarts in/out process through the tranny return line.. should i be cautious of doing future flushes given this issue?

there was one solid chunk that i remember that was a little larger than the others... the other pieces were pretty small and i wasnt sure if thery were solid or not until they stuck on the magnet and i touched them.. all the pieces were small, but the smaller pieces were very small, and the larger chunk was just a little bigger than those.. i guess i'll drop the pan soon to see whats on these magnets... i'll try to take some pictures too to show you guy what it looks like.. but will doing another drain/fill with dropping the pan cause possible damage if indeed the metal i saw is more than normal?
