Is there a GTI VR6 APL?

Trailed a Volkswagen GTI VR6 up a long hill. We were both flooring it and our distance in relationship to each other never changed for the whole 20 seconds it took us to get to the top. It was uncanny. Anyway, his license plate read VR6APL and I was wondering what the APL stood for. Anybody know?
