Why'd I keep thinking that the specs would be the same as a Buick GNX

Oh those Buick T,s, turbocharged, intercooled v-6s were just monsters (if I could find 1 today that,s in good condition with low miles I'd buy it) When I had my 87 5.0 the Buick T-Type were the only domestics that i could'nt beat, with slight mods (chip, tail pipes, and stickies) they are still 1 of the best bang for the buck rides out there. GNX's RULE. Monte's are pretty but no bite behide the bark.

I think I saw on Dream Car Garage or American Muscle Car or one of those shows a piece on the Buick. They made no mention of the Monte Carlo. So, I would say they are not the same platform. The Buick's are rare and, damn, they are fast!

The GNX was the ultimate turbo regal. Only 547 were made and had unique badges and some extra goodies to distinguish them from the ordinary GN.

The GNX had 300 +/- hp from a turbo 3.8 V6 that--at the time it was made-- mid 80's or so, was a lot. These were the cars they raced against modded up Stang GT's and Z28's in the streets when I was in high school.

Back at that time, they were no such thing as import racing like these modded ITR's, Supra's etc. Domestic hp was popular then.

Yes. The Turbo Regal and the Monte Carlo SS (and the Malibu in my sig) were all G-bodies (GM-speak for the '78 - '8? rear wheel drive intermediates) and shared the same chassis. Mostly, anyway. The GNX used a better rear suspension arrangement (torque arm vs the converging 4-link mess that the other G-bodies were stuck with) and had the 8-1/2" differential (vs the 7-1/2" used in most of the rest). Slight differences exist in chassis bracing and body mounting. Weights can vary quite a bit, depending on equipment and powertrain combinations. For example, a turbo 3.8 weighs in at least 100 lbs lighter than the 305 SBC. 3500 to 3600 lbs seems to be more common for the Montes.

Actually, g-dogg's data is pretty representative, but over the years quite a few 350's, 383's, and even big blocks have found their way under the hoods of Monte SS's. You might want to check out the Information & Resources over at www.montecarloss.com for more info.
