Well ... RBa, Toylet and I went to a local store and got it locally. Maybe a local stereo shop or tuner shop might have it.
And a gothic scanner is just an LED strip that looks like the Batman logo with extra ridges.

Black = ground
Yellow(?) = security
Tap into the wires from the clock.
Re: .
Just wanted to add this note: On my 4th gen, the scanner was activated only when I tapped the security wire to my negative wire on the security LED.

Re: Re: .
Yep ... the scanner will do that too. I selected my scanner to just go up and down (boring, I know I know). When I lock the car and the security LED doesn't blink, it goes: up-down-up-down-up-down until the car is armed and the security LED blinks... then it goes up-down-blank-up-down-blank-up-down-blank.

Okay but the currenty security light only blinks periodically. Will that happen with the VARAD scanner also? Dont you rememeber how you hooked it up? Come on now, help a fool out.

Let me think... unarm the car, LED stops. Open the door and the LED starts to go up and down with no stops. And then once you start the car, LED does nothing even when you open the door.

What about when the car is not armed? Does it do anything or just chill until it you arm the car and then it activates the selected pattern?

Keep in mind that I have a 4th gen.
Positive wire... that goes to a always hot wire. I have lots of wires coming into the car for my neons/blacklights/audio stuff... so I just hooked it up to one of those wires.
Negative wire... that goes to a ground ... easy enough.
Third wire... might be yellow (mine was yellow) might be some other color. Usually positive is red, ground is black, so it would make sense that the third wire be yellow. This was a little tougher. I popped out my security LED and it was pretty much trial and error. I spliced the yellow wire into one of the wires on my security LED. Nothing happened. So I sliced it into the other wire. Then the scanner worked. The directions say that the scanner is negatively activated or something like that.
So I guess I spliced the yellow wire into the negative of the security LED.
Hope this helps.

You will probably have to extend all the wires. I know i had to.
The red wire goes to a CONSTANT ON positive connection. (which means power is supplied even when the car is turned off.) this ensures your selected pattern isnt erased, and the scanner doesnt return to it's defualt pattern.
The black wire goes to a negative (grounded) connection.
The yellow wire goes to a connection that is grounded ONLY when the car is turned off (or when the alarm is turned on) I.E the Starter kill circut on aftermarket alarms. Since the maximas factory alarm sucks there is no starter kill circut. I hooked up the yellow wire to an empty fuse slot in the interior fuse box. I think it was the slot that is open in the middle row on the right. (it comes with no fuse in it.) for about 6 bucks at pep boys you can buy this little thing that will plug into a fuse slot and give you the connection on a little wire that comes out of it. (its in the fuse section, you'll see it) simply plug this into the empty slot and hook the (extended) yellow wire that comes out of the scanner up to it. (I also have my remote turn on wire from my amp connected to this) When the car turns on the connection is positive, which shuts the scannre off. WHen the car is shut off the connection changes to ground, which turns the scanner on.
I ran all the (extended) wires up through the headliner and down the front a pillar to the fuse box.

I didnt hook mine up to the security, my yellow wire is grounded so that it runs continuously when im driving and when the car is off.
