Maxima Quality - questionable
Okay, here's what warranty work has been done on my car so far in chronological order:
-Rotors replaced
-Front wheel realignment
-Front wind shield taken out and re-sealed due to rattling
-Center seatbelt container thingy replaced due to rattling (on rear deck)
-A/C sometimes doesn't work (dealer still won't fix)
What the hell? The toyota's and Honda's in our family have lasted for years and years of trouble free miles. Our Camry has over 220,000 miles and literally has not had a SINGLE problem. My nissan only has 12,000 miles and look at that list of things. Don't get me wrong I still love my Max but.....WTF!

starter problem
hey do any of you guys have problems starting the car up, sometimes when you turn the key the motor doesn't catch and just dies? i sometimes can't start up the car after a lengthy drive, and i have to do it a few more times. it doesn't do it all the time, just maybe once every few months. thanks.

A funny story my friend told me:
Only buy your car if it was built on Wed because:
Monday and Tues - recovering from hangover
Thurs and Fri - already started to party!
I guess mine was built on Saturday night!

The car seems solid to me. I could MAKE the tranny slip if I wanted to, so I replaced the solenoid, but that wasn't really necessary, it was more precautionary. No other problems so far, and I just got back from a 1000 mile road trip.
Although RIGHT after the trip, the idling RPMs fluctuated by about 40-50, just a little "rrm rrm rrm" sound, nothing big. still drove fine too.

probably more to come

The fuel sending unit that's in my car is literally the 5th one. And you're right, people with Toyotas or Honda they never actually get to use their warranties. If you think that's a waste and would like to exercise the warranty, buy a Nissan and you'll certainly do so. I had 4 alignments through 12k come to think of it.

Personally, I've had great experiences. My 96 SE has 123k miles and had one problem - a leaking oil pressure sending unit that was fixed under warranty ($75 w/o warranty). I've had no problems with my 2k and I've got about 24k on it now.
Hondas and Toyotas are not perfect. If Hondas and Toyotas are so much more reliable than the maxima and has such better resale, yada yada yada, why are you driving a maxima?
I remember when I bought my 89 Max new it was the top in the
J.D. Powers surveys for quality. Nissan hasn't been close to that rating ever since. This may be why the resale value is so weak.
My 2k SE has been ok mechanically, but with usuall water thin clear coat, cheap glass which chips and scratches easily. I've also noticed that in a heavy rain storm the noise inside the car is unbelievably loud when going above 50 mph. This makes me think the glass is substantially thinner than their older Maximas. Save a little wieght and anger the owner, smart.
I've also read recently that Audi has thickened their glass for a quiter cabin and better safety. The A6 is looking better to me all the time.

My car doesn't start right away, but if I hold it for like 4-5 seconds (instead of the normal 1-2 seconds), it always starts. No other problems that I know of. Interesting enough, my family's had 2 Toyotas and they have given quite a lot of problems. I guess it's just the luck of the draw...

I bought Maxima because I could get a manual with a powerful V6 engine in a 4-dr sedan. This is my 1st Nissan and may be the last one, no disrespect to anyone here. But stashing out 20K for a car with bad paint, bad brakes, ride, noise, rattles, and even thin glass, is a bad deal.
Tomorrow I drop of my car off to get the fuel-cutoff TSB. My new probs at 17K miles is screeching brakes, wheel balance, and all those damn paint nicks. Buy American LOL.

I have had zero problems with my 00 SE after 14 months. My prior 97 GLE was old problem free. Look at Consumer Reports used car guide in any magazine stand. It gives the 2000 Max a perfect score in all areas.

600 miles on my SE and nothing's wrong with it and it better stay that way! but on the serious side, does anyone know how to get rid of the rattling the sub produces on good bass songs? I'm sick of hearing the rattles when listening to some hip hop, and no, im not going to start listening to backstreet boys or something

You're probably better off getting one done at a good shop of your choosing though. It should only cost $40-60.
The consumer reports rated the 2000 Maxima reliability as "exceptional". It was higher than Mercedes. Actually, I did have a problem I had forgotten. My rear passenger window was not working. The dealer fixed it in less than 30 minutes. Everything else is fine. I've kept tract of the tsb's and had the trunk clips fixed. Some folks have had some real horror stories with their cars on this forum but I hope they are the exception and not the rule.

The rattling from the from wind shield that I experience sounds like styrofoam crushing. It was the foam seal with the wind shield and the car.
about the bose sub, sometimes it is not rattling but the sub bottoming out. If you really want to see if the car rattles, play a song with very low bass, around 30-40hz and you will be able to tell. Bass this low will resonate the metal and shake out and show any rattles that you may have. Look at Mdeal's site www.fourthrock.com for a fix.

Well...
My 01 SE (three months old) shakes like Katherine Hepburn after a pot of coffee if I get over 50, and the driver's seat slides from side to side in turns.
I've replaced the tires 3 times and the wheels twice because the dealer said I had bad tires. They "fixed" the seat once, only to have the thing start sliding again 5 minutes out of the service bay.
I'm now going through the "Lemon Law" proceedings to get it replaced.
Better luck to all other Minima owners.

For the most part, Maximas are reliable. One of the best, according to Consumer Reports. I've had the rotor problem and the transmission slip. 2001's seem to have the bugs worked out.
I think for half the price of my Maxima $24,500, my wife got a much better deal on her nused 2000 Taurus.

I wont buy the first year of any new car. I hope by the second year most of the rattles and probs have been fixed. I feel Nissan quality sliding in comparison with Toyota and Honda. Nissan is getting to be a great motor in a $hitty frame.

Grrrrr
Don't get me started. My girlfriend's 99 Civic, 46,000 miles, NO problems. My 2001 Max 8500 miles, paint chips, hood rattles(fixed at home), now it's in the shop for a clutch that is starting to die. I don't even race. WTF
At 15,000 miles, I've had no problem so far on my 2K SE. I did have the fuel cut-off ecu reprogram done last spring - big difference in smoothness, especially in the low gears.
Other than that, it's just been oil changes and tire rotations.
This is my 3rd Maxima - the '96 was by far the fastest of the 3, but had dash rattle problems galore. The '97 had questionable build quality (bumpers didn't match or line up), but went 42K miles without a trip to the dealer.
As for Acura problems - if you think the Max paint sucks, try the TL paint. Not only do my 2002 TL-S bumpers not fit correctly, but the paint isn't even close to matching the sheet metal. It only has 5K miles and already has over a dozen chips in the hood and bumper. One's already starting to rust - and this on a $31K car - who says Honda QC is the best?? Not me. Oh, yeah - there's been a recent rash of tranny failures, too - hopefully mine won't be one of them.
IMO, the build QC on the 2K Max is better than the TL. TL-S is pretty quick, though and still fun to drive - I guess I expected better from Honda.

Just an update....
Hi all,
Long story short - I've had this vibration problem since day one, owned the car for four months now, six service visits, 6 balance jobs (2 with Hunter GSP7900), 3 different sets and brands of tires, and two totally different sets/sizes of Nissan Rims. Vibration is still there, service department says (GASP!) that it's the tires - not their fault, even though they're all OEM.
So, two weeks ago, after laying out even more of my own money to fix this damn thing, I say screw it, Nissan's dealing with it. I finally get a call back from Nissan NA today, and he says "Have I tried taking it to the dealer?" This guy has been working on this case for four freaking months, he is not someone new to the scene.
So now I've had to threaten to go to court over something that should have been taken care of at least two months ago. We'll see what happens next. Go customer service! Yay!
In case you missed it, that last line was sarcastic as hell.

Problems Problems and so on
I know what you mean about Nissan Customer Service.
But as far as build quality it really is luck of the draw and I will buy a 2002 in OCT with the 6 speed and LSD
2k SE 12k miles Bought in june 2000 sold Feb 2001
reason
4k into the car tranny and clutch explodes
turns out the input shaft is 2 degrees off
takes out the clutch flywheel and 2 trannys befor Nissan figures it out
then they cannot evan get the clutch to bleed and engage properly
clutch never was right after the fact
2000 Max GXE bought feb 00 50K and still going strong
Not a single problem to date
92 300 ZX TT besides the fact that it has 180k and gets driven like a beaten gorilla runs great (cept the tranny issues minor grinding between 3rd and 4th)
92 Q45 not a problem in the entire time I owned it
92 sentra still going without AC 150k
91 Max SE besides a new clutch every 50K the car was rock solid till the timeing belt broke at 240k (stupid me was I supposed to change that)

I just took my 2K to the dealer; It's a year old (18k) and I've never had it to the dealer for service.
Problems:
Brake judder (fixed)
Key does not fit in trunk lock (waiting on part)
Rattle in A-pillar (fixed)
I think I've got the fuel-cut problem, but that's for another visit.
Pretty minor stuff, methinks.
I traded in a 98 Subie Outback in for my Maxima the day it died after three trips to the dealer in two weeks for problems; (Wallet $1100 lighter). That damn car car was without a doubt was the worst car I'd ever owned; yet eveyone but me had a great Subaru experience. Luck of the draw.

On the A/C, have them check it to see if its overcharged. mine was from the factory. they kept blowing me off.. finally I was able to show them and it turned out that as it got hotter, my ac got intermittant. they bled some off and its been fine ever since (18 months).
yeah.. I got all those other problems too.. I've given up.
