Raced a Jeep Cherokee

I pulled up to the red light next to a pretty basic looking bright blue Jeep Cherokee. Since he floored it off the line I did too, so he had a slight head start. I stayed slightly behind him until about 60kph or so, then I started pulling ahead. After hitting approx 120kph I was 2-3 cars ahead and called it off (70kph speed limit). The reason I am posting this is because I was surprised how close it was. It makes me think I shouldn't even try racing any Grand Cherokees. Am I just really slow or does this sound normal?

was it V6 or V8? nah their 0-60 should be around 9.5 which is fast for SUV. Did it look modded?

It was a very clean looking vehicle and I don't think I've ever seen this blue color on a Cherokee before. The driver looked like he might be a modder, but otherwise I have no reason to believe it was modified. I am not knowledgeable enough to notice little details with a glance. I was not interested in the vehicle until it started roaring ahead. I thought all the Cherokees were V6.

I never heard of and can't understand the point of a modded Cherokee, I've seen some supercharged Grand Cherokees though..

My fiend has a jeep cherokee with the 4.0 Straight 6. We raced. we were even for the first 20 ft. then I started walking away. We raced all the way to 100 mph. By then he was about 3.5 to 4 car length back. The cherokee's are good till about 45 mph. then they start to lag.

Well, that pretty much complies with my race experience. I just feel like we should be absolutely destroying them. 4 car lengths at 100mph seems too close to me.

The skinny on racing. When someone jumps you off the line it will take a lot more to overcome them. If you and a another AE auto race and he floors it and you floor it when he's going say...5mph....he will pull away....atleast for a while. You would be accerating at the same rate as him and always be "5mph behind" which means he is always covering more ground than you....and pulling away.

Now...the JC has pretty decent perf. My friend has a 98 and it moves well.

My story: I raced a V8 Grand Cherokee a while back...yes...the new ones. I KNOW he was racing cuz we did like 3 times. On the 3rd time from a light I flash power braked and him and I stayed EVEN to 50...then he started to pull. I was happy with my car.

those suvs are designed with some lower end torque for pulling trailers and hauling loads. they'd never get going otherwise. top end power tapers fast tho at higher speeds. same exact thing with my old pathfinder. only 170 hp, but it jumped off the line due to its high torque at low rpms.

Those V8 Grand Cherokee would just off the line since it has soooo much torque and AWD. It's not as fast as the max afterwards but still a very fast car/SUV.

Yeah, trucks and SUVS with V8's have impressive torque, so don't expect to outlaunch them. This summer at the dragstrip, I raced a regular F150 once. He jumped ahead early due to great low-end torque, but I passed him in a few seconds and just ran away. I'll try to find the timeslip.

I think the 4.7V8 does 0-60mph in 7.4 seconds. The old 5.9 did the dance in 7.

c'mon guys show some spirit, dont give in to no dam gas-guzzler SUVs! These are completely differenty vehicles. Oh anyone raced against Hummer??
Shoot I'd rev it up to 3500 then start out in 1st, managing my traction with a clutch. I'd kill any stock SUV from 0-140

Unless you have a 5 speed, your car doesn't do 140 stock. 131 at most.

Jeep is a beast !!!

I have both. Check out my sig. I may put some headers on the Jeep and try to my 0-60 in the low to mid 6's.

I posted on this before. ... I will not race a Jeep V8 ... from start. I get perfect lauches in my Jeep. When I drive it, I am always looking for some guy giving me the eye . Everybody needs to learn.

When I'm in the Max, I look for situations from 30mph and above, or if I know I can beat them from a stand still. I just hate stand stills with a weak looking car that's fast, it makes my car look slow.

I will race my Jeep one night, I can get a feel for how fast my Max really is.

later

I am 5 spd bare-bones GXE, light as a wind.

To the jeep guy: when you're sitting 3 stories high you may think you're faster. It is a nice off-road vehicle, but on the the road, da max is da king! I don't care that you got headers, I sho nuff can get your *** in my moms auto CRV. I am in Maryland. Bring it on, boy.

I have both !!!! I MAY get headers. Look at my sig. If your Mom's CRV can do that then

Next. If I get headers I will destroy most NA and some turbo and SC cars on the Market. I have the same gearing as the 5.9, but flater torque curve and more HP and torque (after intake and exhaust) and it got 0-60 between 6.8 - 7.2. I know my jeep is faster than what I post, but until I test it again 7.1 is cool with me.

Also. I love my Max that's why my wife drives the Jeep.

Last. Bring both "cars" but not your pride, you may lose it

It's all in fun, I love to drive and love to race and love to win

yeop the jeep is definately a fast car off the line. i used to drive a v8 5.2 95 jeep grand cherokee limited and the sucker was fast, but it's not a freeway racer.. the speedo only goes up to 100.. hehe.. but the needle can definately go past it. too bad it gave us poor mpg.. but it was definately a fun car to drive for a while..

The 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited runs the 1/4 in 15.7. Thats faster than alot of auto maximas. Its the same motor (360 cubes) as in the Dakota 5.9 R/T.

I drove a V8 Cherokee today, peppy for a Jeep, but no major excitement. Speaking of domestic, I'm a Chevy fan

SUV

I like the new Trail Blazer.
New Explorer
Durango
Jeep Grands

CARS

Old Impela SS
300M (Would be a great car if it was engineered by Nissan ...)
GNX (Might be going too far back)
Stang (Bang/Buck)
Firebird... (Bang/buck)
Crown Vic (not that I want one, but the reliability ratings have been very high, and the car does exactly what it was built to do very well)

But, none come close to the MAX. It has the reliability, has the style, has the functional stuff, has a good price, has performance, build quality, good mpg, and the X factor.

I got a good deal on my Grand (I like low tech domestics, KISS methology), but far as my next SUV the MDX may be it. After my upgrades Grand gets 16 City and 25 highway ( when my wife drives)

The only other car that's close is the TL, but it has no X-factor.
