Rear wheel bearings bad?
Rear wheel bearings bad?
Hey All,
I'm getting a humming sound (non directional, but it sounds like it's coming
from the pass-rear), most pronounced around 40-60mph, loudest at
50mph...
Could it be the rear wheel bearings? (Brakes look okay, and it's definately
speed related.) (I did a search, and the only 5th gen rear wheel bearing
thread I could find...did not exist on the org.)
Doesn't seem to make a difference if I'm in a left or right sweeper, tone
of hum doesn't change.
Haven't changed anything recently (put responseedge rubber on it
about 5K miles ago, but that was 5K miles ago.) I am having a small
exhaust system problem, but it doesn't sound like the exhaust.
Car is a 2001SEAE, 104K miles, stock suspension.
Ideas?

Very common problem on 4th-5th gen Maximas.
You could very well need new wheel bearing/hub assemblies.
One way to find out for sure is to put a different set of tires on the rear, maybe from a friend's car, and see if there is a difference in the noise level. Yes, it's a lot of trouble but it will tend to isolate your problem better.
