I Spanked a 740

I am not sure if it was a i or an iL. We were on 290 about 12:30 at night and he comes buzzin past(mind that my average cruizin speed on the freeway is 80) My brother-inlaw asked if I could take one, I said "not from a stop, but lets see here". I cought up easy and passed him, then slow down and wait. He buzzes past me again and this time he actually looks like he is getting into it. I am right on his a$$ at 130 until we hit a nice "bend" in the freeway. Correct me if I am wrong, but arent BMW's supposed to handle good? he dropped back quick. I dropped back to 80 and he got next to me and we punched it, he pulled on me until I het 120 in 3rd and went into OD, wich is when I pulled him in and past him up. After that he would not look at me so I could give him the thumbs up... ***** looser.... I thought those cars were faster than that, oh well, he pu$$ied out so I won!!!

HELL YEAH

HELL YEAH, 3rd pulls to just over 120, without hitting the rev limiter. I do push it but cannot stand hitting that damned "wall" I think I have only hit it about 4 times, and that is when I was first learning to manual shift it.

Your car has a higher top speed. If you were losing to 130, he technically beat you cause the 7 series is governed at 128.

Why?

Why would BMW's "Flagship" be governed at all? Oh well... I still say I beat him

Watch out!

This board is full of BMW lovers who can't believe a Maxima can beat a big pig 740 let alone a lot of other Bimmers!

I like the new 745 though..

If Rob hit 120 in third we are to assume he is auto.

The guy who said the 740 won is a joker! How does he win when the measly little Maxima can pass him on the highway? Too funny!

Come on now..i dont like to quote car numbers but one of the big magazines tested the 740i, S8, and S55 and the 740 pulled a 6.1 14.7 i believe. No way is an automagic gonna keep up with a 740i unless it has some serious mods. The guy said he was losing till 130, which is 2 mph above the 740's speed limiter.

Re: Watch out!

The cut off point for the beemer is somewhere around 125-130. My parents had one and it used to beat the sh#t outta my max when my brother would race me in it! I just so happen to be a bmrluvr so I know that from a stand still a max has no chance but it stands a good chance in the long run b/c ours max out around 135 and we would pass it when it reaches it governing speed. There is no diff between a 740i and a 740iL except the wheel base. I'm waiting to trade all my cars for the M7 and I also plan on doing a bank heist as well. Beemers are not to be toyed with. I have a friend that has a 750iL V12 and that is one bad muthafu@#a! Maybe he will sell me his since he changes cars every couple of months!

Re: Re: Watch out!

Those old 750's are crazy! Tons of power for sure! When you raced the 740 was your Max a 5spd with intake/y-pipe etc? A 5spd Max should top out around 140ish. I've only encountered two 740's on the highway. One is a guy who lives in my building and another was this old cat with his woman...neither one of them pulled on me. Honestly I'm not impressed with the 740's performance based on how much they cost.

Just to clarify things, this "run" was a rolling start. He passed me doing 80 and I cought up to him and proceeded to pass him. This was not a 1/4 mile race, it was a ***** to the wall freeway race. IMHO I won, I guess for 85+k they might want to consider taking the governor off...

Im telling you that a Maxima 5 speed will not take a 740 on a highway run. Heres my reasoning.....I raced my buddies 97' 5 speed Maxima with intake, y-pipe, and cat-back against a 99 E320 V6. From 80-120 i pulled 1 1/2 cars on him. Now we also used to have a 98 740iL which would pull 2+ cars on the same E320 at that same speed. From my personal experience I dont see a AUTO running even close to a 740. People don't understand this but Bimmers, Mercedes, and some Audi's are geared to run from a roll and not a stop. A good example of this was when Hennessey ran his M5 against a stock Viper from a roll and the Viper couldnt pull much.

That wasn't exactly a race.....I had a slipping clutch...that would slip at the top of each gear....plus we were going around a curve..and I let of the gas.....duh.....wanna race me in the E320 now....you'll get smoked

most people take any "kills" with a grain of salt, I know I do. But, my brother in-law saw what he saw, I know what I did, and until you either do or see it fore yourself you really don't have to believe it.

I can get mine up to 130 pretty easy, 135 if I can get a long enough stretch of freeway.

I drove a 740 on the highway. It was in one of BMW's ultimate driving challenge. the car had furious accelaration from 70-110. The car had awesome brakes. Nice car all around.

It was a race what are you smoking. You hit it first by 1/2 a car and I was still able to pull on you. A non slipping clutch wont enable you to "smoke" the 320. Give it some credit, It weighs almost 500 lbs more than your Max and has a auto.

Yeah it was a nice kill considering that the car is governed at 128. My mom has a 740 with the sport spackage and it will easily destroy your maxima up until that point. My cousin just bought a anniversary edition 5speed and nonethe less spank I his A$$ all day

Hey Rob....740's the almost the slouch of the current set of Bimmers...282 hp but horrible weight, over 4200 lbs if an IL. Also, lousy gearing (way overgeared) which makes it pretty slow.
A good 740 will do 0-60 in about 6.8 seconds and if not a Sport version (meaning, 17" or 18"wheels with ZR tires) it's elecronically limited to 128 mph...
Now, the 540 is a different matter altogether...same HP but 400 lbs less and if it's the Sport package it's limited at 155 and...I had one and at 148 it was still pulling so dont take these on. BTW, 0-60 on an auto 540 is 6.1 secs and 5.8 secs if it's a manual..definitely quick!
