I put in a new one at about 80K. No big deal. Then another at about 130K and now at 150K it went out again. I thought it was having timiming problems recently beacuse sometimes its been hard to start. Today, the starter just spun and wouldnt shut off.....

Is there something I should be looking for or did I just get a bad starter??

NO I went to the local Auto Zone....The first one was put in at a Pep Boys...

...which means they're re-manned.

I understand that they are re-manned, but should i be looking for another problem? Is there something that would killl the starters or should I just chuck it for for a couple of bad starters?

On my 4th gen, I had a bad CPS, and it did seem to cause the starter to fail prematurely.

I bought a starter from an 01 for $45 at a junkyard a year and a half ago and haven't had a problem yet. I've heard many times that those Autozone starters are junk.

cuz you buy crap remanned ones? i'd rather a junkyard starter before a remanned. but i'v had ban luck with every remanned part i'v ever bought.

you may want to check the voltage to the starter, and make sure that the start gear disengages when the engine starts, if it sticks it becomes an alternator effectively and will blow. This could be caused by a number of things but if it is recurring you may want to check the flywheel teeth and the starter teeth, if they bind they can hold on to the gear and prevent it from retracting.

yea i agree i have an 00' maxima n i bought a refurbished starter from autozone 2-3k miles ago n its already making noises n not starting once in a while from the first try

i m using the Bosch re-man ones without any problem... but one thing to make sure is that how you crank your car...

i saw many people keep the key in crank position for more then 5 sec each time they crank their car... these ppl will need to replace their starter every 3-50000 km...

whats the build date on your car? 8/99 to 12/99 2000 maximas have different starters than the maximas built after 12/99

as long as you buy a starter with a lifetime warranty, it shouldn't be that big of a deal, otherwise get an oem

all 5th gen starters are the same (not 02-03's those are 5.5's)

Never had anything but problems w/ re-man starters. I'd get one from the dealer. I know they are more expensive but towing and labor to keep putting in re-man starters sucks too.

I guess I had issues with the unit I put in a couple of months ago right from the start. I just thought the car had another problem. The new one cranks the car right up and all is good.

i gotta get my car towed people told me it was my starter. Wheres the best place to get a starter? fast? besides from nissan.

Be creative, I'm sure you can find a place that just might carry starters.

Are you sure it wasn't the other way around? IE a weak starter tripping the cps code?

I'm not the only one! I'll never forget doing a 4th gen alternator for the first time........... twice! Only to find out 5-years later on the .org that the original one, which caught fire, was under recall!
