HELP, new noise in front right wheel

So just to add to all the other 100 things wrong with my car, now im getting a crazy noise from the front right wheel.

Its a grinding/ scrathing noise this time. and It does it only when the car is rolling (no load) , i notice it mostly when rolling at around 10 mph or when rolling to a stop , but when i touch the throttle the noise kinda just disapears..

I thought it was the brakes, but the noise does not change at all if i touch the brakes or not. Plus rotors and pads are only 2 months old. I did take the wheel off and did a qwk look at the brakes, saw nothing tho ...

Im thinking axle? but then agian i thought axels only make noise on turns??

wheel bearing? but did realy have much play in the wheel?

first thing i would check is the backing plate; might be rubbing against the rotor

It really does sound like your caliper is grinding to your rotor.

I had a same problem with my driver side rear, and spent about $400 for the job to be done. That included new calipers for the rear, and new pads, AND getting my rotor cut because the grinding had almost killed it.

after more investigation im pritty sure its the wheel bearing......

The noise is pritty loud, i checked the brakes and didnt see any accessive wear on any parts of the rotor, spun the wheel and watched closley, everything is perfect from what i can tell... and also when there is a brakes issue the noise usualy changes when u press and release the brakes, but for me the tone of the grinding does not change

From what ive read wheel bearings usualy makes a hummin noise, any one ever had one that made a grinding noise?

I do have some play in the wheel when i movd it around, but it wasnt much at all, dunno

never heard a wheel bearing make a grinding noise. Besides just checking for wheel play another good way to diagnose wheel bearings is to close all the windows, shut off the stereo and go for a drive. Take some hard rights and lefts (find a windy road) and try and listen for when the noise goes away.

If one bearing is worse than the other, or if only one is dead you'll be able to tell because when you go around the bend the sound will decrease or disappear. In other words if you turn left and the sound goes away then you know the right side is the problem and vice versa.

Again, never head a wheel bearing make a scraping noise. Usually it's a droning or humming like you said. I would second checking the heat shield behind the rotor, sometimes it gets bent out of shape and can make an awful noise.

hope this helps a bit

i defenitly agree with merlin above, wheel bearings don't make a grinding noise, if you had your brakes done lately then check the back plate behind the rotor, I had several cases where the plate slightly rubbed on the rotor and it made an AWFUL noise kinda like grinding noise especially at low speeds.

Make sure everything is tight too.

ya i know this is driving me crazy, i replaced this bearing last year, but after i replaced it , it still had alittle play , but dealer said it was ok to have some play so i left it at that??

But what i think could have happend, is i drove on the bad bearing to long and messed up the housing last time ? im not sure

I was thinking axle, but those only make noises on turns for the most part , correct?

im gona recheck the brake rotor plate agian tomoro just to make sure i uess...
But how could it just bend outa place out of the blue?

Possible noise solution

Check to see if the dust brake dust shiel is bent in and hitting the rotor.

Wheel bearings do indeed make that sound.

BOTH of mine in the front did - I had the grinding/scratching sound. Never had the hum.

Get them fixed soon so that you don't kill the hub . . .

When you had the wheel bearing replaced, did they also replace the hub assembly?

On two different occasions when I had my bearings replaced, they also had to replace the hub assembly. Just a thought.

No i didnt, i just pressed out the bearing and pressed in a new one, and now my friend tells me i could have messed up the housing when i drove on the old bad beaing...

I took everything apart again today, the rotor is not touching the shield and isnt even close, and everything else with the bakes looks good too.

Also i noticed when the wheel was on, i put one hand at 12 o'clock and one at 6 o'clock, and there was a significant amount of movement/play so i think the bearing is bad, but im still not sure if that can be causing the noise, cause it is pritty loud / bad....

Gona order the bearing and houseing from dave b and hopefully it fixes the problem.

My car made the same noise and it turned out to be a bad wheel bearing. The axle nut had backed off and destoryed my wheels bearing. Noise pissed me off.

YEP... WHEEL BEARING...

I had mine done 2 months ago(76,000 miles drivers side). It was BAD... metal on metal gringing at slow speeds.
I had to do the passender's side @ 40,000 miles.
I guess they were not desiged too well??
I actually got mine done at a local shop and they had to replace the bearing and machine a sleeve to fit it into cause the hub was warped. $175.00 parts and labor!!
Heck of a lot cheapper than buying a $400 hub plus install...
