Hey guys,
Been having problems with my car shaking a lot. Got it balanced a couple times and aligned. Its a lot better than before but still shakes from 65-75..and then fine again after. I got new rims a couple of months back..and just realized..the mechanic who installed the rims took off this gray portion that sits on the front end of the rotor..here is a pic:



He took that dark grey cover off w/ a flathead screwdriver cuz he told me the rims wouldnt fit. I didnt think anything of it..but now im tryna think..would that cause any shaking ..not having it on?

If I get wheel spacers would that fix the shaking?

*Everytime I get the wheels balanced...the shops tell me they are fine.

The missing dust cap is not contributing to your vibration, but it will allow dirt & water to enter the rear wheel bearings.

And we all know how fragile they are.........lots of people have had to replace them already.

 

Are you still using the same tires from before? It could be out of whack internally.

 

find a place that does roadforce balancing and have that done. It may be a tire issue that will only be seen under roadforce

 

Thanks for the quick reply guys...Yea I had a problem with my stock GLE rims..they were bent up thats why I had to switch my rims. I have not changed my tires from the old rims...so the tires could be messed up?

It's possible, but as Toastedoats mentioned try to have it RF balanced first, that will tell you for sure if it's the tire or something else.

I had a similar issue before, eventually found out it was the steel belts in one of my tires that was causing it. Odd thing was there were no visual indications that would give it away, most belt issues tend to show up as bubbles.

 

did you try rotating your tires?

 

I had the same problem fitting aftermarket wheels, BUT I didnt have to remove the cover, hence I just dented the cover in to allow the wheel to fit on there without removing the cover.
Did you inspect your aftermarket wheels fully? Maybe you have a slight bend that is only felt on the highway? (dont forget the inside lip you never see)

 

yea..i buaght them new..the old rims were all whacked out..so im assuming they had worn out my tires unevenly which is why im experiencing the shaking from 65-75. Im using the same tires as before...i cant seem to fidn a spot around my area that uses the hunter roadforce balancing machine. the only places seems are dealerships...

tires could be out of round
tires could be cupped due to poor alignment
could have bad wheel bearings
could have worn/bad tie rod ends
could have worn/bad lower balljoints
could have worn/bad strut
could be bent driveaxles

There are alot of things that could cause vibration. The first thing you need to do is a full visual inspection of the wheel/suspension assemblies to make sure everything is bolted down, and looks as it should. Also you need to determine where the shaking is comign from - front? rear?

Check the wheel balance first, that is usually the cause.
