Weird mechanical whirring noise

This just started today. I first noticed it when i shut off my car and it was quiet outside. I shut it off and 2 sec later i hear what sounds like an auto camera winding the film. so i restart the car and began to notice the sound occurring seconds after the rpms drop below 900 or so...every time...as well as after shutting it off. its an 01 auto with 87k. anyone else experience this? what is it??

thanks

-dave

Electronically Controlled Engine Mount(s) may be going bad. I've noticed the noise from day one in my vehicle. Perfectly normal. However they have been known to become loud and go bad. Check out the link below. Hope it works.

I have the exact noise that you describe. It is mostly noticeable when the engine is turned off and last for about 3-5 seconds. I have been able to pin it down to the top of the engine, but that is all. Took it to Nissan 6 months ago, but go figure, it stopped making the noise while there. I have lived with it for almost a year.

I haven't been driving with the sound at all! My car only has 8,144 miles on it. The car only makes the sound after it is cut off. My technician indicated that the sound was normal. Did you refer to the Technical Service Bullletin? Does your car fall within the VIN number range? It directly defines the time limit (more than 1 second after the car is turned off) for the noise and the proceedures to follow when the mounts and or electrical components are faulty. I'm not sure if you purchased Nissan's Security Plus Gold Preferred. If you did, it sounds like a warranty claim to me!

it falls into the criteria defined by the TSB, but unfortunately I don't have a warranty

Take you car back to the dealership and inquire about the Technical Service Bulletin. See if they are willing to do a "good will" repair. The TSB indicates that the manufacturer was (at some point) having enough of a "problem" that owners and dealerships might be concerned. Not too many people know about TSB's. As a consumer, I have never been refused service for a Technical Service Bulletin. The repairs have always been free. How many miles are on your car? If you are having that much of a problem I would contact the dealership with TSB number and information in hand. If they give you a hard time tell them you are calling 1-800-NISSAN-1. You must, first and foremost, establish yourself with your dealership and the manufacturer!

i had a previous issue regarding a TSB for the P0420 code...my local dealership refused to repair it at no cost and in fact charged me over 200 dollars. i did call nissan, and the girl i spoke to told me that the dealership did nothing wrong. she even asked her manager and created a case for the whole situation

in any case what is roughly the cost of a motor mount. In the past i paid 500 with labor for a fluid filled mount and a side mount for a 93 g20. these electronic ones sound even more pricey. In the g20 i had to do it because the whole car would shudder when in reverse. How long can i go w/o replacement on the max?
