HELP! Cant put gas in the car.

Hey whats up. I have an 02 Maxima 6spd. On a trip to the mountains last week, the muffler fell off due to rust. I drove the car for about 1 hour without it cause i had no choice. I noticed that it got EXTREMELY hot under there after a while, and at that point i called a tow truck. After i got the muffler fixed, i tried to put gas in the car, and it wont take much. I just keeps shutting the pump off like its full, but its not even at 1/2 tank. I got under and checked and all the hoses from the tank are fine and not clogged, could it possibly be the Vent valve on the evap canister stuck shut and not allowing the tank to vent when i am filling?

I thought the evap canister was on the left side of the spare tire well opposite the muffler location?

same day it happened, i tried it at over 5 diffrent pumps. Same story, i would get like 2-3 gallon in then it would click off. If i pulled the nozzle back a bit, it would start spraying gas outta the fill tube.

Any chance it is full and your gas gauge is not working properly?

Evap cannister fuction should not effect fuel level, it only stores vapors.

Not sure where this located, probably part of the filler cap, at but FSM suggests
2. Inspect fuel tank filler cap vacuum relief valve for clogging, sticking, etc.

I think air has to escape through a valve in the filler cap and this is clogged.

I think that the valve is located on the evap canister. I traced what alldata says is the vent hose and it goes into the back of the evap box looking thing under the drivers rear, then there is that valve on the front of the box with a hose the same diameter as the vent hose that goes to this small round thing under the rear bumper lip that seems to vent to fresh air.

Sorry but I don't think the evap venting has anything to do with filling up. I noticed that when i took off the filler cap there is one hole for the fuel nozzle and two small holes above it ( about 10 and 2 oclock position). I think those holes are where the air would escape when filling. Seems odd that they would clog but worth a check. I would take a stiff wire and make sure those holes are clear.

It appears that there are hoses that run from those two small holes in the filler area. At least one of them runs to the gas tank. If one of them is clogged or restricted in some way it may cause your problem.

According to FSM one of them should lead to the top of the gas tank.

Keep us posted, ive tried searching about this problem and asked about it and have came up with nothing. My car has been like yours for a 2 years now. There is defiantly a clog in the venting system on my car.

I googled this problem, seems like it's a fairly common in many makes of automobiles. The small vent holes/hoses may be clogged with gas. You may have to blow them out with compressed air or something. When you are filing your tank with gas the air in the tank has to vent somehow apparently this vent is clogged. I could be wrong but I don’t think it vents through the evap system.
