Seat Swap

Merry Christmas Gents!
I may be p!ssing in the wind but I have to ask anyway. My 01 AV addition with leather has a ragged out driver's seat. A junk yard replacement will surely be just as bad. Passenger seats are in like new condition. Is there any way to convert a passenger seat to driver's seat using hardware from exsisting seat? In other words change a passenger seat to opposite hand. If not what are some options?

I think with side airbags this would be an impossibility or very expensive at least. You also have to consider the seat controls on the side.

It would probably be better to see if an upholsterer can replace some of the leather panels for you. Would cost $$ but not likely to be a cheap solution other than a partout or some luck at the junk yard.

Plus who wants a destroyed passenger seat that you can see while you're driving. Someone should always be in the driver's seat

Keep on top of the 5th gen classifieds. You can also contact your insurance company and ask them to let you know the next time they total out a car like yours (some will do this, some won't) and let you know what wrecking yard it ends up at.

Converting the passenger seat to a driver's seat will probably end up costing just as much as having the seat properly repaired.

I know exactly how you feel too, the leather on the driver's seat of my 626 was crap and I didn't like the car enough to do anything more than toss on a cheap seat cover.

just look in the classifieds or car-part or have it redone by an upholstery shop

The passenger seat has less movement and control options than the driver seat.

I took the leather skins off of my 2004 I35 seats when I was working on them. I think that the side airbags don't have any effect on the seats. They are symmetrical. Only thing I would think would be different is the seat bottoms may not be symmetrical on the sides where the trim and power switches are.

Be patient, I have seen leathers on ebay for cheap. Some people have pulled the stock leathers off for whatever reason (custom interior maybe) and they occasionally end up on eBay for a good deal.

/\/\ wouldn't the side airbag be on the wrong side of the seat if you swapped the pass/driver seat?
