high pitched whining noise from engine

hello everyone
i need some help
my 02 max is making some weird high pitched from the engine everytime i accelerate
it sort of sounds like a turbo spooling,
it only happens when i accelerate, as soon as my foot is off the gas, the noise disappears

any ideas?

thanks in advance

No idea what it is, but I have the same problem. Its not crazy loud, byt it used to only happen between 35 to 40 mph, but now I hear it all the time it seems. Its the strangest thing.

Vacuum leak perhaps?

My car makes a faint 'chirp' sound at 900 rpm as it revs up or down, but only at 900 rpm.

alternator maybe? often before the alternator goes, it starts making a high pitched whining noise that increases with the revs.

when I heard it on the 95 max I used to have, the alternator went the next day.

I doubt it, my idle is very smooth and it is only as it passes through 900 rpm up or down, no other rpm at all.

Mine does that too even from a light roll from 30MPH, it does sound like a turbo spooling up.

does it happen in a certain RPM range? Could possibly be your timing chain hitting the cover... I get a strange noise, kinda like a metal rattle noise when accelerating but also disappears once I let off the gas... mine began after a horrible experience at Jiffy Lube and took months of "we cannot duplicate the problem" responses from the dealer... finally took it to an infinity dealer and after an oil consumption test I found out it is my tensioner which needs oil pressure to work properly and keep the chain tight... apparently its a common issue in the 3.5L's in both the max and the infinity.... good luck.. it's annoying!

Just curious, what did they do to fix it?

I'm not that knowledgeable of the "mechanics" of my car so I'm not going to event attempt at getting into detail... I know if involved taking alot of things apart because they were trying to avoid it for a while... in the end they had to replace the tensioner (it was bent)... i'm sorry i cannot tell you how much it cost because the owners of the infinity dealer are family friends and refused to let me pay for it. But since then, no issues.

thats exactly what it sounds like
i know that the noise is coming from the engine, no transmission, no wheels, etc
but cant put my finger as to where

4 some reson mines did it when i put my intake on.....i later found out that the clamp holding the filter came loose and it was squeezing air through the tiny gap that was between the pipe and filter...

could be a vac leak like mentioned above but this it sounds like it could also be an issue with belts.

No worries about the cost, just wondering if simply replacing the tensioner fixed it or maybe it was an oil pump or main bearings causing low oil pressure to the tensioner that was the real cause.

nope... unfortunately the real cause was a Jiffy Lube "oil change" that apparently never happened, because when i went back to the dealer after supposed oil change ... there was virtually no oil in it and still had a Nissan oil filter in there! first and last time i ever took the max there!

anyone with this same sound also have issues with power lost in there 3.0s?? i'm looking at a 2000 SE, possibly picking it up this week and i hear this same noise, and it seems like the engine is lazy. my gsr that was stolen two months ago felt quicker than this by a long shot and i thought the maximas were suppose to be on the same 'playing field', if you will with the DC2s..

anyone care to impart some knowledge?

u mean whether the belts have tension or the condition of the belts?? and to check the idler pulley i'd have to pull of the timing chain cover?
