2002 Just gets stronger as miles go by...

Hey, just wanted to share something i noticed with the Max.

When i first got it it didn't really seem all that powerful and on 80 degree weather in the highway with normal Houston humidity cruising on the highway at 75-80mph usually means the tach goes to the 3000 rpm mark or just a bit over that.

But with 2600 miles (1 month old - yep, i'm loving it! hehehe) i noticed that the only time i go over 3krpm on a highway cruising speed of 75-80mph is when i gun it. Even with normal passing i don't have to gun it and i can easily pass a slower car without downshifting.

I guess you'd consider this as broken in?

I do have one complaint and hope to get it fixed soon... as reported by several others here at the .org the driver and sometimes passenger side front door panels (where window switches/etc are) rattle too much. Mine's getting worse with every passing day...

Yup, our cars do get stronger as we rack up the miles (up to a certain point).

Man, I've had my car for almost a year and still only have 11000 miles. I always though it kinda hit its peak at about 3000, but I was wrong once again. Oh well, It's 2k2 trade in time anyways.

Houston Max

Hey Mike,

I also live in Houston and have had my '02 for a couple weeks...only 500 miles so far. But, I totally agree with you about the passing power on the freeway, I rarely have to kick it down to easily pass others, even when they are gunning it. Feels like a lot of torque from 2500 rpm on up to me. I have taken one top end run on the west belt and got up to 120 before my fiance told me to shut it down...@#$@%@! This was done pretty easily without revving over 4000 rpm, feels like a lot more to give. The car does seem a little slow off the line though, and it hesitates when I first hit the accelerator from a stop...maybe because it idles at like 500 rpm. Do you notice that at all? Those rattles in the doors are starting to get loud and annoying. Are you going to take it to the dealer to fix or try it yourself? I bought mine at Lone Star Nissan on the Southwest Frwy and they seem to have a pretty good service department so far (window tint and beam axle clunking noise fixed). Let me know what you are going to do cause I want to remedy also.

later,
chris

Re: Houston Max

Hey Chris,

Where in Houston are you at? Are you the one with the black Max? I saw one - one night while driving along Sage/Westheimer.

Yep, i did notice it is somewhat slow off the line but i've gotten used to where the sweet spot is off the line so i just try to push the pedal enough to speed up yet not too much to get torque-spin.

Funny how we both had our fiance's tell us to stop at 120. I accidentally (really!) was able to reach around 135 before my fiance told me i was going too fast. Honestly? I didn't notice at all.

As for the rattling, i've already narrowed down the are that has the rattle. I'll try taking it to Mossy Nissan first - if they don't fix it i'll try opening the panel myself. It shouldn't be hard, there's only 2 screws holding that panel to the door frame. I'll be taking it out soon anyway to swap out those speakers with aftermarket one's.

So what was really wrong with that clunking? Glad you had it fixed.

Oh, yeah, there is one other thing i noticed... at certain speeds the car seems to pull to the right. Has that happened to you?

Thanks.

- Mike

Me Too

Picked up my '02 GXE on Tuesday.

I was in love before I bought. Now I'm in heat (so to speak).

Obviously still in break-in mode (under 50 miles!), but man, it's a rocket. I had 3 test drives, but there's nothing like driving your own. I took a friend out today and he was carressing it like a new girlfriend (I filled him up with beer to get him to cool down).

About the pulling right thing...I haven't noticed it at all. I think I saw another post on that, something to do with the tires...maybe just on the SE? And the rattling....haven't heard anything, but then love is blind...and deaf.

I do not have the privelage of owning a 2k2, but I do have a 20th AE. (wich by the way ownz you all ) there are starting to be a lot of maxima owners here in H-Town, we really need to get together and organize a small meet, maybe along ICCH. I know of a couple max's in the club. (not personally though) You guys should go over there and say hi, lots of kewl people. Maybe we can organize something along with one of their weekly meets. Their web site is www.houston-imports.com

Re: Re: Houston Max

Yo Mike,

I live in the Rice Village off of Kirby and Tangley. My max is '02 Grey Lustre GXE with tint. I also removed those rear splash guards! Anyway, I don't think that was me you say on Sage/Westheimer.

I am sure that the door rattling is related to the panels and in particular the window switches. It goes away if I put pressure on them! I'm gonna take them out and lube them up or put felt shims in there to see if it helps. Let me know how it goes with Mossy. Did you buy the extended service policy? I was thinking about going back to get it because it includes maintenance and a loaner car( riding that courtesy shuttle sucks!)

The clunking sound was fixed by lubricating the rear axle, torquing down all bolts, removing loose items in trunk, securing jack, tools, and spare tire. Not sure which of these actions cured it, but it is now fixed for sure.

My car does seem to pull to the right slightly at certain speeds, but only when I hit the gas a little so I am thinking torque steer? Maybe the tires are following the road. Also, the freeways have a crown on them for water runoff so car could be following the right tilted crown of the road.

Anyway, email me if you want and maybe we can meet for a brew sometime. I did not see your email on you profile but mine is cdogz28@yahoo.com.

Laters,
chris
