I could have bought an '02 Jaguar Vanden Plas from a friend of mine who owns a body shop. The car was in excellent condition (interior was mint) and had typical miles for the year. He only wanted 13,500 for it and they ran around $60k new! There is a reason they depreciate so much. Great car when you have a factory warranty, but once the repairs come out of your own pocket, it is a very expensive car to fix.

5.5 is better looking from the front with the larger grill, slightly faster. I own a 5.0 SE.
By the way, I bought my 2001 Maxima SE for 10,650 from a dealer. It was 78350K, metallic dark grey color, has Sunroof, 8way pwr driver, 4way pwr passenger heated leather seats, 17 inch wheels, relatively new tires, traction control, bose stereo, automatic climate control, auto dimming rear view mirror, carpeted trunk lid.
I may not have had the best deal. But is it a good deal??

I accidentally found a thread where someone compared a Jag to a Maxima. Seriously, is this the 5th gen forums? I've read more misinformation in this thread than in the highly misinformed 6th gen forums...

The 01 made it to edmunds most wanted list and they awarded it the best sport sedan under $30K. I dont see any mention for the 02-03 of winning something similar!

Ehhh but they like mixing up those awards. plus the 02-03 are much more attractice inside and out. probably ride the same, but my 02 looks fantastic compared to 00-01 bland exterior

The 3.0 IS more reliable than the 3.5.
The 3.5 is faster, but IMO not that much... Yes, the 3.5 burning oil is an example of Nissans lowered quality standards. I say this because if your 3.5 is burning oil, it's no easy fix. Expensive and 95% of the people on this board (probably more) can't fix it on their own, they NEED to bring it to a shop ($$$$$$), call around local shops and ask for a quote on a ring job for the 3.5 and let me know what they say.
If all you care about is speed, then get a 3.5, but I don't see the point in risking an expensive PIA repair for a slightly faster car, especially since IF you do tend to even use the extra power (drive really hard) you are almost guaranteed to burn oil since you will fry your rings even faster.

my 5 gen was awsome...fast i took many a car with it...wish i could have it back...i paid 9500 for it with 81k....very reliable never gave me a problem...my friends 5.5 is faster but i dont think much...i had a jet chip intake and exhaust in mine and i think i would have kept up with his no problem...i took a 95 5spd by 3 lengths so i think you could get a 5th gen do basic mods and keep up with a 5.5 gen for less money and have a more reliable car...oh and i do like the look of the black 5th gen

a 3.0 with bolt-ons would not be able to keep up with a 3.5
#97
a stock 3.5 vs a modded 3.0 yea the 3.0 would win...my car was easily making what a 3.5 makes stock...otherwise i wouldent be able too get a g35 by a half a length...or maby they cant drive a stick...3 races all the same outcome
#98
so what magical bolt-ons do you have that adds ~30hp

see how the big boys can turn a simple question, into a argument.
did the originator of this thread get the answer they were looking for?
people give their 2 cents on here and get disputed to the grave. if u dont have a possitive reply, just shuuuuuuuuut up.
my would anyone wanna be a donating member when veteran members (some) act like a$$es

no shyt sherlock, a 5spd 5th gen will crush a 5th gen auto??? what kinda of comparison was that??? .......... ALMOST everyone misunderstood comparing a cars overall with speed, yeah we all know 5.5th gens are faster, whats your point... i crushed a 5.5th gen auto with my fourth gen, when i was ruuning them times in my sig. and 5.5th gens are suppose to be faster than that stock... speed doesnt make or break a decision in the overall comparison's of cars, sure helps alot but there are more factors to look into.

FYI... My Maxima has destroyed several 5.5's, from a stop and on the highway, auto and 6 speeds.
Again that’s my modded (headers, b-pipe, berk, UDP) 2000 Auto against stock 02-03 autos and sticks.
As for the Jags and reliability... A current Nissan owner has ZERO right to slam another company on reliability and repair cost. Newer Nissans are garbage and problem filled; my Maxima had SIX maf sensors in 18 months, all the coil packs replaced, two alternators, TCM, five sets of front brakes, axles, all the wheel bearings, exhaust rots right off… What a rock solid car.

Well stock for stock a 5.5 gen will take a 5th gen. Now i would get the 3.5 unless yuoplan to boost then i would go with the dek since you wont have to change anything internally. If you are looking for a driver 5.5 gen all the way. heavilly mod still 5.5 gen. Boost 5th gen. But thats my .02

5th or 5.5 gen hmmmm
<----lol at this entire thread.
i am bias but IMO ill take the reliable 5th gen. And with the money i save put the bolt ons to make it as fast as the 5.5 gen. Not to mention the majority of the 5.5 i see on the street are autos. And if you like the front end so much just buy the stupid bumper and head lights off ebay.
Sincerely,
5th gen owner, not jealous of 5.5s at all.

can you prove that the 5th gen is more reliable than 5.5 gen? my 03 has never really had any problems and id say its VERY reliable. no oil burn either. between the two its a no brainer. 5.5 wins in every way.
#113
?
^^^And that may be so, but i just think its funny that in MANY other threads on here MANY 5.5 owners burn oil and tend to have issues shifting into 3erd when it counts. Yet as soon as we start comparing 5th to 5.5s its like " Not me! i never burn a drop NEVER!" heh where are all those burning 5.5s now??
It seems that the rumor on the forums that 5.5s burn oil is WELL documented. Almost as much as the other rumor that theyre output was over rated from the factory.

an STI isnt even in the same class as the maxima. not saying one is better...they are just different
#118
#119
in the same class as a maxima - accord, camry, etc
a maxima has more power and handles better than all of those
#120
With all that said, the Max is a pretty sporty FWD sedan and I like mine most of the time. Any time really, other than when I do U-turns or park anywhere tight.
