Bad Alternator...cause starter bendix to go out?

I'm just curious if having a faulty alternator can cause the starter bendix to go bad. My alternator was doing some funky stuff to the electronics of my Maxima and I got it replaced under warranty at Firestone Auto. After picking it up I noticed the starter was grinding intermittantly, mostly when it was cold. Firestone Auto said the bendix was bad and the starter needs replacement.

Hmm....I wonder if these two are or can be related. I am looking at the potential of taking up the starter replacement costs with Firestone Auto since these two issues were so closely related.

I've worked on enough cars to tell you that anything is possible, but that situation you have does not seem likely. Too much or too little voltage from the alternator would affect the battery for sure, perhaps some sensitive electronics, but doubtful on the starter. It's a fairly durable component, usually succumbs to time & wear. It's probably just a coincidence.
