What I'm trying to say is for Chris to go to a repair shop of his choice, have them do an estimate and compare what the insurance estimate was and if the repair shop believes that it will cost more to have it repaired, they will contact the insurance estimator and go over what more may need to be done.If it is determined that the repair will be more costly than originally thought, then another check can be issued to cover the additional expenses.

actually, i spoke to allstate today, and they said that i could go to my shop of choice, and if the bill came to be more than what the check is made out for, then the shop will call allstate and it won't be a problem

That doesn't mean they don't work with the bodyshop if the estimate is different. Plus some damages may not be visible until body panels come off the car. In that case, they will send an updated estimate to the insurance company who may then send out an adjuster to inspect the additional damage, or if it is a shop that regularly works with that insurance company (like State Farm First Choice shops), they will take the bodyshop's word that the additional work is needed.

That sucks. Lucky you were there to see the person. Just last week my car was hit by, I assume, a plow truck. Came out to my car in the morning wtih the mirror hanging by the wire and a huge scratch/gash from the driver's side tire to the driver's door handle. Great. And OF COURSE no note no nothing. (not that I expected it)

This will be the 4th time someone has hit my car and caused probably $500 damage each time.... and each time it has been where I wasn't around the catch the driver... so I'm always eating the bill (damage has always been JUST SHY of my deductible
