Messed up Tranny... again!

All right ... so i have got a 2k max and i have already replaced the automatic transmission once. Granted, i put a junkyard transmission in it the last time, but still... are the 2k auto tranny's that bad? I really dont drive my car that hard for the tranny to blow up again.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a place where i can get a either new or rebuilt transmission for cheap? Thanks guys.

F***ed up Tranny!

well the first one got messed up becasue the previous owner had flushed the transmission like 6 or 7 times before i got it. What i did with this one since it was a junkyard tranny was added a transmission oil cooler. May or may not have been a mistake idk. but what its doing now is freaking out and slippin between second and third about 5 or 6 hundred rpm, and then between second and third only about 3 hundred. So im obviously getting a little aggrivated. im jusdt going to spring for a new or rebuilt one depending on the price. Any suggestions?

5/6 hundred RPM? Or 5/6 thousand RPM?

Trans cooler shouldn't pose a problem.

New is ~$3k, rebuilts are hit and miss depending on what shop does it.

Shift manually for now, it increases line pressure and it shouldn't slip as much.

I second the motion to just get another transmission out of a wrecking yard, try to find one with as low mileage as possible and run a carfax on the car it came out of. Make sure you drop the pan and inspect for metal shavings, clutch material, etc and the fluid smells like ATF is supposed to smell like.

unfortunately ive already been through the process of inspecting the magnets. Its not a good sighn. Ive been interested in doing the 5-speed swap for a while now. Any kind of instructions for the linkage and everything else? Been looking for a totaled maxima for a while that i can just swap everything out of.

Either buy yourself a new transmission from Dave B (Don't say that is overboard, because I did it, and I am 20, and yes I paid for it), or 2. Shop around, it is really a personal choice which shops to go to etc. I personally just got done rebuilding my transmission, so technically I am on my 3rd... and I have an 02...

Pick up a low mileage junkyard 6spd and do the swap. Aside from the occasional bad 3rd gear synchros, the 6spd should hold up much better than another 4AT or 5MT. No input shaft bearing issues, stronger gears, and way better gas mileage to boot.

Slipping between 5-6k rpm? Hmm...

First, I am an old fart (well... 47, close enough). I have had absolutely no problems with my transmission so far (108k miles). That said, I've had my engine up to 5-6k rpm maybe three times in 7 years. Which reminds me to a story:

A man went to a doctor, and said, "Doc, it hurts when I do this!". The doctor replied, "Then don't do that."

You push your Max to the max, you pay the price.

Going WOT is hardly 'pushing the Max to the max'. You consider that beating on the car?

seems like we have the same problem. sometimes my car slips so hard it redlines and bumps off the revv limiter. but only between 2-3.

ima buy another tranny with 20k miles on it for $500

no no it doesnt slip at 5-6k rpm... it slips about 5-6 thousand rpm when it goes to shift. But thats only between second and third. Im confused tho. Generally when the transmission starts to go bad, doesnt it slip going from a stop? My max will stay strong in the gear its just bad when it goes to shift. Is there a ecm flash that would refresh the computer and maybe shift better? Im just hoping and praying that its not the transmission again

No, they usually start slipping on shifts first, then the wear and extra heat end up taking out the tranmission over time.

Have you ever seen the inside of an automatic tranmission? Pretty complex.

This ought to give you an idea: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/automa...ansmission.htm

You *can* rebuild one, but expect it to take several hours and you may need some special tools.

Honestly people tend to think automatics are far more complex than they really are. As long as you have documentation and a relatively clean and unobstructed workspace, someone with automotive experience can bang most rebuilds out in a few hours (plus some time for cleaning parts).

The only real involved parts are ensuring that the gaskets and seals are positioned properly, everything is properly cleaned, and that the VB and checkballs are replaced properly.

Everything else is pretty much snap rings and bolts, remove and replace parts.

Then again, I can see how it would look to someone who's never done a trans before. In my opinion (and experience), it's far easier to rebuild an automatic than it is to rebuild a manual.

Rebuilding a .030 over 350 for my Chevelle (took me about 1 1/2 hours to put it together, including plasti-gauging all the clearances) was far less intimidating than rebuilding the TH350, so I just picked one up at a wrecking yard for $100, put in new front and rear seals and a shift kit.

Between a small block and a turbo 350, I'd rather rebuild the trans, 10 out of 10 times. Just my personal preference, though.

I was hoping and praying that it was the tcm or the solenoids because the labor involved with that would be a lot less time comsuming... but i think that the tranny is slipping wayy to much to just be something electrical

I have a feeling our automatics are a lot more complex than a TH350.

Personally, I hate all the electronic controls. So much easier when you could adjust shift feel via the dowshift cable.

I would look into a tcm before a tranny. There are threads on what tcm models to get.

If it was me, i would go with the 6speed manual swap cuz manuals are more fun to drive, and i believe they don't break as easily as automatics, but which ever you do, good luck

Yeah my 02 slips about 200-300rpm under partial throttle on the 2-3 shift, under full throttle it will bounce off the rev limiter a few times before it shifts into third. Very annoying. This 02 altima 3.5SE i drove at work, intake, headers, catback, udp, the tranny slipped bad on the 1-2 shift, it was so bad that it would just sit there and bounce off the rev limiter till you let off the throttle at which point it would shift.

Nissans 4spd auto FTL.
