Make sure evacute the whole a/c system first. But I'm sure you already know that, so I'll just shut up now.

Removing all R-134 freon from the system. Just a CYA we do here.

Evacuation is after replacement, not before, and R-134a != freon.

OP: Get a shop to recover the R-134a, make sure you have the correct oil level in the system after you replace the compressor. I forget the rule of thumb for AC component replacement offhand.

After it's replaced, evac and recharge (~1.4 lbs, IIRC).

if the belts aren't replaced, you might think of doing that since yhou will be down there anyways. The PS belt is a PITA compared to the main belt. Have fun. If you really want to have fun you can run a shorter belt and cancel the AC compressor and see if you feel a difference lol.

If you wanted to spend a few more bucks and time you could replace the expansion valve and receiver/dryer.

Also check all the AC line connections and make sure they are tightened, especially if you see an oily/dirt residue.

Does anyone know if replacing just the ac compressor bearing is more work than just replacing the whole compressor.

I am thinking of doing this myself. I saw some kits at Autozone today for around $30 or so. Can I discharge and charge the R-134 myself or does a mechanic shop have to do it?

Unless you have a vac pump with the appropriate fitting, you can't do an evac on the system. Basically, no...let a shop take care of it.

swapping the A/C compressor with a new/used one is an easier job than replacing the bearing.

After you are done replacing all parts and the system is air-tight, charge it w/ a small can of freon + oil, then turn off engine bleed out the charge through the schrader valve. Then fully charge the system, that will do an adequate job of minimizing atmospheric air (and moisture) in the system and you should be good to go

Stealer wants $1000.00 to replace my compressor. Said the bearings are going bad. I have an 02 with only 42K. Babied the car the whole 6 years. Extended just ran out 2 months ago, go figure!

So pissed, I want to just trade it in on the new Maxima!

www.autoairplus.com. I just bought a 4th gen compressor, (OEM brand: Calsonic, although the actual compressor has no markings on it....) for $280, free shipping. They also have receiver/driers, expansion, valves, and O-rings. Cheapest price on a brand new OEM compressor I've found.

if system has been open for a long time you might want to do the receiver drier too.
Have a shop recover and tell you how many pounds they recovered as it is expensive. If you want to save the 1 hr labour do yourself replace the compressor and 2 o rings of course. Also if you want do the receiver drier but not necessary if system not open too long, or empty, then go back and charge it up and put some necessary PAG oil and dye and they will vacum the system for 15-20 minutes and then charge it up.
Recover, vac and recharge we charge 1 hr. SO since you don't need a diagnosis you basicly have to pay for 1 hr plus any extra r134a you were low plus dye and oil.
