I don't know where that sound comes from exactly...but I do know that happened to my car on two separate occasions...and right after each a coil died...

could be the bad engine mounts or the transmission mount if not those then could be the vaccum leak. i get this too.

1. Open hood
2. Start Car
3. If no one is around rev the car with your hand assuming its a 01 or 00 or have some one rev the car while its runing
4. Listen and look at were sound is coming from
5. Did you try this at all before starting this thread?
Theres a couple places it can be coming from:
the alternator
power steering pump
ac compressor
vaccum line leak
bad belts
belt tensioner
a dirty throttle body-disassemble intake piping and look at butterfly valve then clean it with a wet rag

I posted this same Q; in the 6th gen forum. What your problem is your timing chain. In my case Nissan had to replace a sensor and some other part. Trust me it's your timing chain. I can look for my receipt and tell you exactly what it is.

Was the whine there before the oil change? What kind of filter did you use? You need to get UNDER the pass side

Try turning the wheel and see if it makes the sound change for a second then go back...if so i have the same problem and it very well could be the idler pulley being that the rpm bounces a bit when i turn the wheel.

the timing chain doesnt cause a "whine" it causes a rattle.

please keep your advice to the 6th gen forum

Well since you posted that you have a 1000 amp im gonna say that its your alternator dieing i've heard this on cars with sound system without really good electrical system for the sound system its just a tiny whine at the start do to the fact that when your car starts the alternator is under load u might look into getting a replacement one ready

Let me guess. It makes a soft, quick "chirp" when you lightly rev past 900 rpm and again when it goes back down under 900 rpm? My car does the same thing, someone said it had to do with the motor mounts. 4 months later, no change in the sound, frequency or loudness so I am not going to worry about it.

see that's the exact sound I thought he was talking about...except I only heard it when my coils were about to fail. I don't know what the relation is...if there is even a relation but it happened to me twice...so I dunno...get a free scan just in case?

A continuous high pitched "whine" as someone mentioned above can be a precurser to the alternator packing it in. The other thing that can generate a "whine" is an over-tensioned serpentine accessory drive belt, particularly with the Maxi because it is adjustable.......not a spring loaded tensioner. I also have the "chirp" on accel and decel from/to idle, but I don't really know how long I've had it. Doesn't seem to be from the accessory drive end of the engine......I think it may be just the IACV.

I have same problem with my Maxima 2000 (78K) and now with Infiniti I35 2002 (47K), the only difference that on Maxima it is much louder and on Inf it is just started and it is not loud yet.
I would like to fix it before I sell the car, but no idea what to fix!
Please, help!

The chirp related to going past 900 RPM's is indeed the electronic motor mounts. The mounts can change the stiffness internally (idle and above-idle conditions). Mine got so bad that they were cycling 6 times everytime I was on and off the throttle. I found a guy that posted pictures on how to disconnect the harnesses and remove this functionality from the electronic motor mounts. I unplugged mine, and have been happy ever since. I cannot tell a difference in the vibrations or performance of the car. I recommend searching for a thread on disabling the motor mounts. I have been happy since I did this. Oh yeah, there is a rumor out there that the mounts can short out the ECU... expensive. Although, I have not heard of this happening yet.

Never did anything to the engine mounts, still no problems more than two years and probably 50k miles later.
