Hey guys,

I am trying to decide whether I should take a chance on a used set of Illumina's. A guy offered to sell me an Illumina/Progress setup, but he told me that they were riding very rough and low after 5-10K miles. He also said that the adjustment on one of the rears is destroyed. Here is his message:

I had this exact setup on my car. I didnt like it because I was running on 20s. Now I have tein coilovers. I will sell this setup to you but a must tell you a few things first.
1. setup has about 5k-10k miles
2. paid to have them installed and it was done improperly so the adjustment on one of the rears is destroyed.
3. I dont know if any of the struts were blown but after the breakin period for the springs it was too low.
4. The ride was very rough on 20s
5. if you still want them all u have to do is cover the shipping and pay 400

I'd very much appreciate some guidance/opinions about whether I should take a chance on these, or whether I can fix the destroyed rear adjustment?

I'm not very knowledgeable about suspension setups, so I'd be interested in hearing whatever you guys have to say.

Not a good deal, and sellers always lie about mileage. Plus, riding low on Progress he could have blown them prematurely anyhow.

I wouldn't get them given that information. See if you can find a good price in one of the threads in the Group Deal forum or certain online stores like Sport Compact Only, Performance Peddler, etc.

If you're still looking for used, another thing to consider when it comes to used suspension is where the seller is located, because crappy roads and harsh winters will also play into the decision, IMO.

Newfoundlandud, let me get back to you. I'm in Canada and can probably get you a really good deal on the progress springs. I'll check illumina prices as well. Shipping might be a little high but no duties from Mississauga to the rock.

I have a guy in NY that says that he can get me a decent deal on the Illumina's, but I'd run into shipping & duties as well. It seems that I've been getting all of my stuff from there lately, but I'd love to start finding my stuff in-country....

I would say that shipping on each (Springs + Struts) would be ~$25 which isn't that bad when you consider the duties that I would pay. If they shipped together, they'd probably go for $40 as a combined shipment (Yes, I have shipped too many packaged lately....lol)

I'll pm you my address, and hopefully you can hook me up.

Buying used Illuminas isnt a big deal.. Mine have been GREAT, even after about 40K on them and taking some HUGE potholes, even a huge speedbump at around 35mph.

They are great, but like others said..theres no way I'de pay 400 for them used.

I think the $400 is for both springs and struts, which is a good deal, unless I read it wrong.

Anyway, I don't think anyone is bashing on buying used struts. I think the concern is these two points:

Let me add my 2 cents! I got that some setup, but with 18" (18lbs) rims with 245/40/18's and Nissan should have made this the factory suspension and stance! It's one of the best riding lowered spring/strut combo out there! Progress springs are guaranteed not to sag and even those Illuminas come with a factory warranty as long as they're not used for racing! Check out AJ-USA $483.80, free shipping, a group purchase maybe lower! Iinitially had the Cattman AGX/Progress setup and all I got was a extreme case of coil bind and blown front struts! That setup was all 4 gen hardware with the front being modified to fit the larger Gen 5 knuckle even the progress spring kit was even Gen 4! If I would've known that Illuminas/Progress ride as well as they do, I'd not spent any money on that modified AGX setup! The springs from Progress have been revised and the ride can be described in my opinion as comfortable and compliant yet firm with excellent control! Don't throw any Ghetto 20"'ers on your ride' they're big, heavy, and slow your acceleration, and will destroy your suspension quicker than anything else!..... Except 22,24,25" etc....
