By the looks of things in this thread this one may be over priced a bit. I wanted all of your opinions though. I am going to look at it on monday, but have talked to the sales people down there. 63k, SE not exactly what im looking for but my 4th gen is dying fast. Anyway, input on what you would pay would be appreciated.

$9000 for that car is a ripoff. No leather no climate control...ftl dont buy it. OR if you want to buy it dont pay more than $7000. A few months ago I bough my 02 SE with less mileage, fully loaded for that price.

I dunno its your call depends what you're willing to spend... Its listed for 12 so I doubt he will go under 9.... I would offer 7-8 tops and see what he says. I bet for that price he hasnt had many offers so you might get lucky.

ok guys need opinion here,

the car: http://miami.craigslist.org/pbc/cto/1372740175.html

2000 maxima 5 speed.
as you can see in the pictures the car is clean. it has 133,000 miles. he offering to me for $3500. what do you guys think go deal.

the problems: he told me that the motor mounts will have to be replaced eventually and the rear brake calipers need to be replaced. theres a very small oil leak from the headgasket and he said that a midas mechanic quoted him 400$ to replace it. and theres a ses light that he said is an 02 sensor(im gonna take it to auto zone to confirm).

also im not really loving the color but i think i can work with that. what do you guys think

The link is dead... can't see the car. Headgasket is usually over $1000 job... price and mileage sounds decent. If you are a DIY'er than it could be good as a fixer upper. If you are not good at fixing cars you should take this in to nissan dealer for full prepurchase inspection IMO.

Test how the clutch feels and put it through all the gears. Make sure you pull it up over 4-5K rpms to see how it feels higher up in the revs. Look at the condition of the front tires too. If they are worn excessivley compared to the rear the owner probably bagged the car. Also bring a friend and have them rev up the car while you watch the exhaust, check for black or white smoke. (white = serious headgasket problem/ black = burning oil)... other than that just rip it around and put it through its paces, take some quick corners, hit the brakes hard and see the stopping power also. btw dont crash the car though!

I just picked up an 2002 6 speed se fully loaded. I am being told its a te and has lsd. Is there any way to verify it? It has the titanium pedals and he also did a burn out and both wheels left marks..is there a code under the hood that can verify this? Thanks in advance. And no it doesn't have the titanium rims on it they could have been taken off.

Newbie Required Some Advice

Ok I scoured the threads here...my eyes are burning from all the good information. So I have found the following things to look for as common problems on the Maxima's:

1. 02 sensors
2. converters
3. coils
4. blower motors
5. shocks
6. MAF

I am going to look at an 01 Se with 72k miles on it at a nissan dealer tomorrow. Have I missed anything above in my list? Also, they are offering a Nissan warranty for 2years and I want to see if any of the parts that are known problems would be covered. Can someone verify if my list is complete? If not what else should I be looking out for?

Thanks in advance!

So, I am interested in buying a 2002 maxima gle auto w/96k miles. I have test driven it, engine runs well tranny shifts fine, no odd sounds in motor, suspension feels a little soft, maybe floaty, which I have read that is normal. It has been well taken care of, at least by the most recent owner, whom I know personally. I put the car on my buddy's lift to check out underneath, didn't spot any oil or fluid leaks, cv joints looked fine, but strut dust boots were torn on all four corners. Engine bay was dirty, but everything looked to be okay. The exterior was okay, a few dings, and a large paint chunk missing from the rear bumper. The interior is messy, a few floormats are missing, but the dash/headliner/leather seats are in good condition. It needs a good cleaning.

I have a few questions for the .org members:
Do the struts need changing? Or just new dust boots?
What is the average milage that ignition coils are changed? I was planning on changing the plugs, would it be smart to go ahead and change the coils?
And, the final question:
She wants $6k for the car, considering the maintenance that might be needed (I am also planning a tranny flush, and its due for an oil change) and semi-high mileage, what should I offer her for it?

Thanks in advance

'99 or '01 20th AE? HELP PLEASE!!

ok guys, here it goes! I used to have a 95 maxi, but I wrote it off (young n stupid)!!

Now I want another maxima...ive been doing my research and these forums are a LOT of help!! Now I'm stumped and need the pros opinions!! Here are the 2 cars I narrowed my search down to...

1) 1999 Nissan Maxima SE - Gold on Champagne cloth - 2nd owner (Father and Son) - Clean Records - all service records - 5spd - no bose radio - 200k KMS (not miles) - a bit of rust in the wheel wells, otherwise very well maintained...asking 3250$

2) 2001 Nissan Maxima SE 20th AE - Dealer Sale (bought from auction) - Black on Black - Clean Records - 5 spd - 200k KMS - clean car, as you all know, very sexy black on black...asking 4750$

My issue is, i told myself I won't spend more than $4gs...hence my dilemma!! Am i being stupid for even considering the 99 or am i being immature for trying ignore my budget?

What are the opinions of the bosses on here? Is it worth the extra 1500$ for the 5th GEN or will the 99 suffice for now?

Please throw some help my way!!

thanks in advance for your thoughts...

Cheers,

- Aspiring Maxima Owner

-I'd recommend spending just a bit more and going with the 5.5 gen... buuut, i'm biased... I have a friend who has a '99 5spd and it's actually really nice... way quicker than anyone would expect. Again, if I could stress anything, I'd say go for an 02 or 03... they look the nicest (IMO) and they have the 3.5... which you definitely wouldn't regret getting... but if that really is just unconsiderable because of the price, I think either of the others are good. (Love 4th gens but it's gold (ewwww!) the 01 is newer and more powerful(if not too much) and BLACK!

Ya price and INSURANCE are my main issues, going up to a 5.5 gen is out of the question for sure.

I am wondering about reliability, which car, in your opinion, would be best for a younger driver. aka, not much to spend on repairs! I love the AE, specially the Black on black, but besides cosmetics, is there any main reason to get the AE? I've been reading that their 02 sensors are a b*tch and they seem to have more documented issues than the 4th Gens...what are your thoughts on that?

thanks for the quick response!!

Hello everybody!
New to this forum and new to maxima. Digging this forum since the first day I found it, like a mad dog. J Found on local craigslist 2000 GXE with 199,000miles. The KBB Fair value is $2900. I think I can get it for $2300. The car in pretty good shape, it still drives, the only problem, the owner said, that it do not accelerate well (no power and hesitation). His mechanic said that catalytic converter need to bee replaced.
What do you think guys? How much will cost to replace it if I buy my converter. Does it look like it is the Cat problem or could be something else? Thank you for all your help in advance! Can’t wait to get 5th MAX!!!

I'm going to look at this 02 6MT SE today. If it checks out to be a solid car, what should offer? What I hate about buying from a dealer is 9/10 times they don't have any maintenance record for the car so it's a gamble. If that falls through I found this 00 5MT SE. I talked to the owner and he sounded like an honest guy. It has 150k miles but was religiously maintained; new plugs, coil packs, pads, rotors, clutch, rear main seal, etc.

2003 maxima se

Hi guys im new to the forums.

So last month I totaled my altima 3.5se 5-speed. I only got the money from my insurance company today and started looking for a car.

I really like the 02-03 maxima and that is what I am looking for.

The closest one I found is 5 hours away. It is a 2003 maxima se 6-speed, loaded with 50 000 kilometers for 11k canadian. There is no pictures but it should be in good shape considering the mileage.

I am thinking about offering him 10k. What do you guys think? And should I bother using carfax or is that site not dependable these days?

Nice find on the KM and if I was spending 10k of my hard earned money I would want to know everything I could about the car, how many owners, maintenance records, and if it had been involved in any accidents ... never heard to do all the research as possible.

are you talking CDN funds? Im wondering because you are talking kms...
$7500 sounds reasonable if you are.
I bought my 02 SE with 110xxx kms for $9000 but I got a really good deal from a friend of the family

I'm looking at buying a 2000 or 2001 Maxima in the next couple of weeks (budget of $5k or less).

The bigger engine doesn't matter to me (I'll be coming from a weak a$$ 4 cyl Camry so almost any V6 will make me happy).

Are the CVT auto trannies more reliable or something?

Other than the bigger engine and CVT tranny, are there any compelling reasons to choose a 02-03 over a 00-01? (other than it being a year or two newer obviously).

well i missed my chance on the previous car I was looking at but found another one closer.

It is a 2002 se 6 speed with 122 000km for 8k. I am going to go see him tomorrow with the money.

I also have an autocheck account and can help a few people out.

Why's the center console of this 2000 Maxima so different (its a 2000 SE I saw for sale online)? I also notice this car has a manu-matic/tip tronic transmission...... 1st time i've seen that.

EDIT: forget it, it looks like a Volvo interior. looks like the dealer posted pics of the wrong car.....

the listing is here.....

almost all the center consoles i've looked at look like this:
