My 2000 is fine but like many 5th gen owners the O2 sensor is a problem. My ses came on P0138-39 and I have not yet replaced the sensor. I keep getting the wrong part. They sent me one with too short of wire hook ups. But now the car started bucking and showing extreme loss of power. I just hope I'm not encourgaging more damage (cat?). I hope when I install the new sensor(s) I'll be back to normal.
The bank 1, sensor 1 is an issue in that the parts guys look for front left and right or back left and right. I have not been able to determine which is which. The sensors are all the same, it appears, its just the length of the wire hook up that's different. I hope.
I replaced the maf last Fall and other than these issues this 2K Max has been great.

I am thinking of getting a 2002 Maxima with 80/90k miles for about 4500. Luckily, a car dealer who lives at the building I work at is sympathetic to my car troubles and is willing to sell me something at cost + a few hundred dollars.
Since the car I had been driving was a 2000 Camry, reliability is a must for me. Other than regular maintenance, that car needed nothing for all its 130,000 miles. Overall, is the Maxima a pretty reliable car? Is it fairly safe to say it will last me to at least 200,000 without any major four-figure repair costs?
Is the gas mileage as high as advertised? (26-ish highway?)
Also, how is insurance on the 02 Maxima? I recently was in at at-fault accident.
Lastly, since the dealer can basically get me the model I want, do any of you have any other recommendations for me? Something with a bit of style, but also very reliable and not entirely predictable or bland?
Thanks a lot for your help!

Basically, go find the car you want and buy it. Insurance cost, that's entirely up to your history, nobody can predict that.
MPG, again, you can do some basic research, just reading through the posts here will educate you.
If you had specific questions relating to real issues, we can chime in. General questions, you alone can decide.
Anyway good luck.

Youtube has a gread video on how to get the stereo out, and Crutchfield sells adapters, harness adapters and anything else you could want to make that fit and look right. It's not that hard.

gas mileage depends on how heavy your foot is, but based on that you're coming from camry you will probably see worse than advertised for first few month untill you get used and tired of tearing up the road. maxima is completely different beast than a camry even more so if you had 4 cylinder one.
insurance shouldn't be too much of a problem, comparable to other cars in category
you need to check 2 things in maxima, engine and tranny.
dip stick should be clean, if the is sludge any where, especially in the dips or all the way up top around the screws pass on the car it means oil change was not priority of previous owners. Tranny should shift without hesitation and be smooth especially when you accelerate had then let go of the gas, there should be no big bangs or jerks.
and most of all because you're not familiar with this car drive another one and make sure the one you want to buy is not lacking in power, because for someone who is not used to vq even when its not working properly will seems fine, been there

I hope someone can help...
I have a 2003 GLE with 131,000 miles on it. I get a little chatter first thing in the morning but it goes away real fast. I am pretty sure it is the VCT because I change the oil every 3,000 miles and there is no sludge build up anywhere. I even had a small oil leak around the oil pan so I took it and had it resealed. The guy that did it said the pickup was clean and the pan was clean too so I am sure the oil pump is working fine. Will the VCT shatter at low RPM's cruising down the hwy? It goes away when I give it alittle gas. I also only use high octane gas and changed the fuel filter last month.
Any info would help, thanks.

So my connection is going to use the dealer-only auction site Manheim in order to find my Maxima. I'm thinking I want to spend at most 6k, which should allow me to get a pretty solid vehicle (~90k miles 2002 GLE).
My question is, is there anything "better" about this dealer-only auction sites? Is there any way to know how the car was maintained, or if something like the timing belt will need to be replaced somewhat soon?
Thanks

I bet he posted it above the kbb so people would think they're getting a deal on it. He prob picked it up from auction for around 45. I personally wouldn't pay more than 6 tops. That's just me, these things are sadly losing their value quicky. I got my 5.5 gen with 68k on it a year ago for 7.....

The AE is special. No one would argue differently. But you already know what the 3.0 liter is like in your current ride. The AE won't be that much different. (There's a 5hp bump, I think.)
By my reasoning, if you're wanting another 5th gen, then you should be looking for a 5.5. Not too much cost variation between an 8 year old car and a 9 year old car, but a BIG difference in the engine. Your priorities may differ.
Looking at the AutoTrader photos, it sure looks clean from the outside. However, that fugly fart-can exhaust would give me serious pause to question the previous ownership. Just saying. (I'm a dual-tip snob.)

I get that about color... pearl white is very attractive on the Maxima.
Searching through AutoTrader, that seems about the going price for a 5.5 6MT. Tough call. I'll say it again, the 2001 AE is a special car.
Kind of like this $10K Titanium Edition.

This car is soon to be a decade old dude... okay it's an "ae" edition, as rare as they are my buddy got his at auction price for around 4k. I think even cheaper. I got mine for 7k as stated before with 68k. 3.5 6mt fully loaded minus navi.... If you are patient enough you'll find a good deal on a car with less miles.. He's asking 9,000 for a decade old car with 100k. I'm not bagging on the maxima at all. But his asking price is extremely high. I wouldn't pay over 6k.

I got my 02 6mt for 7k back in September. I only paid that much because the dealer had a list of stuff he replaced (half of it done wrong or not done at all I came to discover) and because he said he would fix everything wrong with the car that happened within 30 days (they did the inspection at this dealership and didn't cover the strut and axle that I discovered needed to be replaced within the first two weeks) I only consider it a good deal because they took my explorer for 3k trade in...

Regarding the oil burning on 3.5L engine I manage find a solution. I use synthetic oil which has all but eliminate the need for constant oil burning. I use slick 50 from time to time which appears to help.
