Hi there, hope someone will be able to answer this question for me.

I am looking at a 5th gen max.
It needs a new 5-speed tranny.

What I need to know is what tranny will work in this car?

I have done a lot of research, but have come up with a LOT of conflicting info.
I know any 5th gen 5-speed will work, except the 01 AE.
I have heard that certain year Altima tranny's will work.
I have also heard certain year Sentra 2.0l version tranny's will work.

Does anybody know exactly what cars, and what years, I can source a tranny from?

Any info would be GREATLY helpful.

Thanks!

I've had a 96 Max for a number of years, and I know my way around the car fairly well now. I'm thinking of adding a 5th or 5.5 Gen. How similar are the mechanicals on those cars? I.e. how much of my fix-it knowledge is likely to be useful?

thinking of getting a 2002 SE

Hi all,

Brand new to the forums, and as you may have guessed, I am thinking about getting a 2002 Maxima and have a few questions. It is a 6spd SE w/ 56k miles, 6 spd manual for $8897. It is a charcoal color w/ a light brownish cloth interior. No navigation.

Here are my questions:
  1. How about the price? Seems decent to me considering it is from a dealer. I would obviously offer them less.
  2. When I go look at it, what exactly should I look for that is specific to Maximas and this gen/year? I am an informed car buyer in general (I'm here right? ), but have never owned a Maxima or any Nissan for that matter. I have been browsing this longish thread for starters...
  3. There are some acronyms thrown around here that I need to learn: 6mt (6spd manual I assume?), HLSD?, what is a 5.5 gen as opposed to a 5th gen? What are some other common acronyms?
  4. Anything else you can think of to look out for, things I should know, etc?
Thanks in advance

YES! Get it. That seems like a great deal...
-Yes, 6mt = 6sp manual
-HLSD = Helical Limited Slip Differential. Yes, from what I've heard, it only came on some of the 6mt's and you want it if you can get it.
-The 5.5 gen is the 02-03 years as opposed to 00-01 for the 5th. The 5.5 gen has a bigger engine and more power (3.5L vs. 3.0L)
-Things to look for: hmm... the Bose CD player often starts cutting out on the left side... there's a write-up on here to fix that if you're good with taking things apart etc...or you can just replace it... or maybe you won't have that problem, or don't care. also, I've heard some 5.5 gens burn lots of oil, but I don't have that problem... so I don't know. Thats about it I think. If I were you, I'd definitely pick up that car! Great deal for the mileage/options.

So, have my 97 Maxima with 240,000 miles on it and like this 2002 Nissan Maxima GLE fully loaded, only 74k miles - $8100. Made an offer and it was accepted. Thinking of having a mechanic go over it, but car is with one owner, very clean, a jammed 6cd player, and a few bezel lights out, but no other stated defects.

Anything else that I should be concerned with ?

oh, and one other thang. Seller admitted that the transmission had been replaced at 60+ miles. He mentioned a sensor was replaced, and also said a brake caliper had seized and was fixed.

I suppose I should ask about oil usage, but so far nothing came up that I did not expect from reading this forum. Thanks to all of you who participate in this forum.

QUESTION ? If you had a failed 6CD changer, HOW WOULD you proceed to fix it ? Wifer is a librarian and has a music collection that she likes to play in the car and CD books as well.

QUESTION : Should I go for a cooler for the transmission ?

Hello,

I am possibly buying a 2000 SE, auto, 105000 miles, all options. Body straight (couple of small dings and scratches) interior almost spotless, mostly well maintained.

Transmission runs out ok - never serviced. Plan to drop pan and flush. Car has had O2 sensors replaced, along with mass airflow sensor. Scary though - fluid not burned - but beige and small amount of black in it.

Engine runs smooth - but not too peppy - no idea why. Very clean under hood, oil has been on the 3000 mile plan.

Need your best expert opinions - can't afford a lot of juice for maintence after purchase. In addition to the trans fluid - I plan to chg oil, cabin air filter, plugs, alignment, and cut the rotors.

Should I get it or run away?

hello all,

new here but not new to nissan. currently i have a 1997 altima that has been good to me but my gf uncle has a 5th gen in his driveway thats been sitting there for almost a year. its a 2001 se auto (01 AE) i believe

as of right now there is 110k on the clock a tad bit of rust below the door (ny winters) and needs a new rear side marker, and i will have to purchase new tires all around thats all for the exterior

as far as the interior the front passenger seat is mutilated ( leather ripped back seat panel torn off) from my g/f little cousin

now her uncle is trying to sell it to me for 3500. im definitely not paying that but wondering how low could i go.

thanks for any input thanks in advance,
lance

Definitely a DIY'er car. How's the engine history though? The other stuff you mentioned can be replaced with used components. Body work, too.

That's a decent score.

Fixing the 6 CD player - depends on what's wrong with it. There is an outfit that fixes the Bose stuff on Maximas I saw scroll by on google once, and they may be able to help. On the other hand, getting a newer stereo and adapter (like from Crutchfield's), especially with MP3 capability might be a better way to go.

I'd get it up to date on any maintenance (oil change, coolant change, check belts and hoses), fix the bezel lights if they annoy you, and other than that, disconnect the wires from the motor mounts (when the electronic ones go, they take the ECU with them), and from that point on fix things as they pop up.

No transmission cooler needed unless you're pulling trailers at the upper limit of the weight range. Replaced transmission ... I would not worry about it, but if it has a lifetime warranty, see if you can track that in the paperwork.

Rear brake calipers risk seizing every few years unfortunately because of the way the parking brake actuator and stuff work internally on it. Remans are $50 at Advance Auto, and while annoying, you're supposed to change the brake fluid every two years anyways. Keep an eye on gas mileage or excessive heat at the rear wheels, and fix it when it happens.

I'd change the transmission fluid and filter, but not bother flushing. Depending on what's used, it can hurt more than it fixes. If you want to get more fluid out, change it again after 10000 miles.

The lack of pep in the engine is usually a MAF issue if no codes are thrown. You can clean it, and if that doesn't make it suck less, replace it. There are lots of write-ups on here about this, tricks and tweaks.

Everything else is standard maintenance at that mileage interval, and if it hasn't been done, do it. I would not cut the rotors unless I was changing pads though.

I'm going to look at a 2000 Maxima SE 5spd w/132k miles.

Based on the info I've found here I should check the following:
1. 02 sensors replaced?
2. converters replaced?
3. coils how many replaced?
4. blower motors working on 1-4
5. shocks replaced?
6. MAF replaced?

The car has 2 owners 1st owner all Nissan service w/carfax to prove it. 2nd owner not sure about maintenance but he only owned it for 20k miles.

I have the dealer down to $3,200 and it is in great condition based on the dealer's explanation and the pics provided. I'll let you know how it turns out, but i'm open to any feedback

**BTW why don't we update the original post with "you should check X, Y, Z before you commit to a Maxima"***

Hello all!

I'm new to the maxima family.. well,, actually new to nissan all together. I looked at a 2002 GLE with 90k on it today. I fell in love with the car immediatly black leather interior with a gunmetal gray paint. Well everything was good untill I looked under the hood. There was radiator fluid spots splattered around and you could smell the sweet fluid. She informed me that she didnt know it was like that and that the car doesnt overheat or anything. I tried turning on the car and saw a little bit of fluid at the top of the radiator ut couldnt identify if it was leaking. i can do repairs myself and dont care if i have to replace a radiator or hose or thermostat. i was just seeing if this is a common problem for these cars and what i should be looking for. The price is very right for the car and it has the lowest miles out of alll the other GLE's ive looked at. Give me some advice please.

thanks

Theres a common leak on the right top side of the radiator, you can't really see it unless from the side because its underneath the intake scoop (I don't know if thats the correct term). Is the coolant low?

5th gen = 2000 - 2001 VQ30DE-K engine
5.5th gen = 2002 - 2003 VQ35DE engine

Where the spray marks were it was the passenger side of the engine bay towards the front top. some on the engine cover. She decided to take it to sears (where she has brought the car since she has purchased it) and have them look at it. then they are going to print out what it is. I figure i can bring the price down more and then just get one of those koyo group buy radiators. What I'm mainly trying to see is what my worst case scenario is.

i appreciate your timely response.

according to nissan they are all 5th gen (A33) even though there were significant changes from 01 to 02...some people on here just use 5 and 5.5...and some use A33 and A33B..."A33B" and "5.5 gen" doesnt technically exist..i prefer using the engine...3.0 and 3.5

so you will see the following

2000-2001, 5th gen, A33, 3.0, or DE-K
2002-2003, 5.5 gen, A33B, 3.5, or DE

Hello there ... I recently joined the forum 'cause I'm thinking about buying a 2000 SE 5-speed with 82K. What items should I be checking? How many miles more can I expect from this clutch (I know this depends on a lot of factors)? He's asking 5.9k for it.

TIA,
G

Want to sell my 2003 6 speed

I am thinking of selling my 2003 SE 6 speed with 60k miles on it. Not sure how the demand is for stick shift in NJ/NY. Its a fully loaded car and is in mint condition. I tried to trade it in but the dealer was paying less so i kept it to myself.

In the past 7 years only issue i had was with the EVAP Canister and the vent control valve. And i replaced the battery, tires, brake pads and 2 drums last year.

If i get a good price i will sell it but not sure what to expect. Any info will be of great help

first off price, seems really high.i sell cars for living, and these cars are great and do hold their value but i would pay more 4K for one.dont listen do dealer saying it only got 59k, who cares it 8 years old, it sup[er hard to sell older cars liek that, because nobody will finance one and you havw to pay cash for it, and it 7gs or whatever the price it is.
i would reccomend going to the dealer and giving him deposit, tell him what u want, say ill pay u 3-500 dollars to buy one for me at the block, and im in canda, your cars are cheaper there then they are here

Punctuation/grammar much?

My head hurts after reading that.

Anyhow, you do bring up some good points, re: older cars and financing.

Trouble is, that is a fair price especially from a dealer for a car with that low mileage. I would do the normal car shopping antics (www.kbb.com, www.NADA.com Carfax).

I'd say if you left with it for $6000-6500USD out the door, you did well.

5th gen typically = 00-01, 5.5 gen = 02-03. Aside from the engine, there were some differences from 01-02.

HLSD = Helical Limited Slip Differential.

Here's a small list:

150K Maintenance?

I have a 2001 that's about to hit 150K on the odo. What should I do for maintenance? I was thinking the timing belt, but I don't know what else.

Also, if I remove the airbag module, do I need to put locktight on the screws when I put them back in?

There is NO timing belt on Maxima from 1995+ models. But theres maintenance you can do to your car since its hit 150K, you can find in from your owner manual or around the forum.

Why would you want to remove the airbag module? I wouldn't mess with it if I were you...

Anyone have free access to Carfax? I'm broke and cheap as hell and want to know if a Maxima I'm looking at is OK. The VIN is JN1DA31D72T426547. Thanks! I'll owe someone something if they can get me a report, something small tho.

If you're seriously looking at it at a dealership, ask them to provide the report, most if not all these days should. If it's a private seller, ask them to provide, or half the cost them .

It's not, that's the reason... And the seller won't pay for it as he seems to not care. Not that it's a bad thing, he says the car is fine, but I just want to make sure.
