What to do with old BLOSE HU
I finally replaced mine (2002 GLE) with an Alpine 9881 (with motorized face plate-nice) after years (and years) of frustration.
I had the classic left-sided speaker short and the HU was replaced once under warrantee. I did the "fix" myself a few years ago, but I think that the "fix", while fixing the problem, resulted in a mis-alignment of the CD reading laser, because the first few and last few tracks on a given CD would skip.
Anyway, the unit is in perfect physical condition, except for the "skipping" problem. I'm wondering if it is worth anything at all or if I should just chuck it. I'm kind of a pack rat and don't like the idea of throwing something out that would have cost me $400 to replace, but really it's a giant paperweight at this point.
Thanks for any input!

With everything going "green" lately, there should be some sort of electronic recycling site near you. A lot of companies are gearing up for next year’s conversion to all digital TV signals and lots of folks getting rid of their old analog TVs.

I have an '02 GLE too and my Bose HU started doing the left speaker cut-out thing a week after I bought my car (last June). I also bought an Alpine HU (CDA9833) and my old Blose HU is sitting around collecting dust. If I could get $150 for it on ebay, I would be very surprised.

I did my bose hu, and it's still working perfectly.

what I did was putting some layers of scotch tape on the back of the ribbon where it went into the sockets, problem solved.

I have just the regular factory HU and it really blows but my friend has an 02 audi a6 with the audi symphony Unit and it sounds awesome. What would it take to get mine sounding as good? amp and better speakers? i want to keep the head unit for the steering wheel controls

You can use the HU face to put over your new Aftermarket Deck. Thats what i need to do since my eclipse doesnt come off but if some smart a$$ try to take it they wont be able to use it cause of the security CD

the HU is notorious for a design flaw that has a ribbon connection from the CD player to the amplifier. There is a 90 degree bend in the ribbon, and after wear and tear, the connection wears out. You can "fix" the problem by disassembling the unit and nudging the ribbon back or forth a little bit, but eventually the problem returns. I did screw up the the mounts so that may account for the skipping problem I have. Regardless, I am very happy with the Alpine HU, although it is annoying to remove the face every time I turn off the car and the Scotche face plate sucks hard core and looks cheapo.
