Time to change spark plugs

Time to change spark plugs

Hey,

Dropped by my mechanic this morning to find out the details with a tune up. He told me that he strongly recommended getting the spark plug connections tube/boots replaced while I was thinking about getting the sparkplugs done. Being on a tight budget in recent months, is it required to change the boots up? I was quoted a hefty price of about 475 including labor and the boots as well as the spark plugs.

By "boots" do you mean ignition coils?

No you dont, those are the coils themselfs. Should only replace those when they go bad.

Call Dave B. Spark plugs are $6 each, I think. You'll need a new gasket too, $12 I think.

why replace smething thats not broken. if ur coils are fine for now, leave it. replace the gasket as mentioned and call it a day

There is a way to test which "boots"/coilpacks and find out which ones are going bad.

475 is definitely coil pack price. Unless stated otherwise, I wouldn't touch them until they give you problems.

That price is definitely CHEAP if that includes OEM quality plugs and the labor & coils like he says....and yes, wait on the coils until/if there is a problem. If I were gonna have someone do the plugs & coils, that seems like a steal considering the price of just 1 coil and the plugs, etc.....

I've done my own, but sounds like a more than fair price coming from a shop.

I can get a set of 6 coil packs and 6 Iridium plugs for less than that. It doesn't take but an hour or so to do.

I was saying that it's cheap coming from a shop...if i remember correctly I paid $65+ from Dave B for my coils, and seems like plugs were another $25 or so. Based upon these numbers, it's only $60 for the shop to do them all. And yes, it doesn't take a lot of time, but I'd like to see anyone do them in 1hr without banging tools around and doing a slap/crap job, considering cylinders 3&5 are a pain.

I thought it was a fair price. BTW, considering the dealer wants $600 for an MAF job around my place, and what others have paid dealers/shops for coil jobs, his quoted price was absolutely fair. Yes, most things can be done cheaper by oneself, but in this case based upon the numbers I've provided, his quote was not a ripoff.

If you eman per plugs (25$), you got monkey raped on the plugs. I paid 8$ ea. for my Iridiums.

You need to spend more time and do some research. A MAF job wont cost more than 30 minutes and 90$ for the part.

NO, I am not that ignorant..it seemed like it was that for the set...got them from Dave B, along w/ the coils, AND the maf. And I DO research, that is why I did NOT pay local stealer prices on the MAF & coils and I did them myself. You might wish to re-read my post since I did not mention install time on the MAF, which takes, what, 3 minutes???? I was referring to the plugs/coils which take quite a while if one has not done them b4, and like I said, those 2 rear cylinders are not any piece of cake getting the coil out from between those castings. I should know, I've done them myself. That said, his quoted price seemed fair, assuming good quality OEM plugs & not cheap AZ ones.

lets try this again. ive been looking at the parts diagrams and i dont see any gasket related to the coils or spak plugs. WTF are you reffering to?

He's probably referring to those who have the 3.5 motor (I think) because it seems as though I've read on here where they have to remove the plenum in order to change the rear plugs. Not sure exactly, but something along that line is what I think hes talking about. So, a new gasket when reinstalling the plenum (or whatever it is that has to be removed on the 3.5l)

yeah as previously stated, the coils go bad over time, and unless you have a bad coil there is no need to replace anything but the plugs, i got iridium in my max, and they cost me about 6-7 bucks each, and thats probably the easiest spark plug change i have ever done.If you are the least bit mechanically inclined i suggest you do it yourself just becareful removing your coils if you do so, and as for the gasket thing, unles you got a 3.5 theres no need for a new gasket
