P0021
P0021
I had a ses light on today. I went to autozone and had them pull a code. It came up with the P0021. I called nissan usa and they said my car isnt available for the recall. I searched the forums and i dont know what fixes the problem. Everything I read on the forums is different. Does anyone know what is the actual fix for this code. Please help me out.
Intake Valve Timing Control Circut Failure bank 2. I have read that changing the oil can eliminate this code check the oil see how dirty it is then swap for some synthetic oil + a good filter (mobil 1) and drive it. It should go away... if not this is what the FSM says the possible causes are.
pick-up portion of the camshaft
Harness or connectors
(Intake valve timing control solenoid
valve circuit is open or shorted.)
Intake valve timing control solenoid
valve
Crankshaft position sensor (POS)
Camshaft position sensor (PHASE)
Accumulation of debris to the signal

I first got the P0021 code about a year and a half ago. When I first reset the ECU, the code didn't appear for about a month. When I reset a second time, the code came back in about a week. Now I've had this code for about 6 months. When I reset it, it comes back on within 30 minutes of driving.
Here are my findings so far:
1. Checked oil to make sure level is full... I'm using Mobil1 and good filter... I did use AutoRX oil additive about 2 years ago I've read that camshaft and crankshaft sensors can be fouled by oil additives
2. According to Scottwax (http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....ferrerid=32075) it's good to take off the plastic engine cover and reground the camshaft position sensor. I took both grounds off the block and used a wire brush to make the contacts shiny and reattached the grounds. I reset the ECU and the code came back within 30 minutes of driving.
3. I ordered a front bank cam shaft position sensor from EverythingNissan.com for about $68 after shipping and handling. I found an aftermarket cam shaft position sensor made by Standard Motor Products and it cost around $53 shipped but I figured the OEM part was worth the extra $15.
When the new front sensor comes in I will install and reset the ECU and see what happens.

I got this code recently. I will check to see if it has reappeared, and if it has, I will do a cam timing log to see how it affects it.
After that, I might just have to order one too.

I have an update and my P0021 code is gone.
I did receive my cam shaft position sensor. Before installing, I inspected the area around the sensor and noticed a large vacuum hose above the sensor was disconnected. Since my code has slowly appeared over the past year and a half, I can only assume that the hose has slowly loosened until it finally disconnected all together.
I put the hose back on and I have been code free for the last 500 miles or so. Stupid to think the thing has been loose/disconnected during the last year and half.
Should the P0021 code reappear, I will post updates in this thread.

My P0011 code comes n goes. I notice no significance as to when it disappears and if there is any difference in performance. I think It comes on sometimes.. shortly after I refill the gas tank. Who knows... and is it anything to be concerned about?
mine just came on today, i pulled 5 codes!!!
P1800
P0011
P1800 Pending ( on the code reader)
P0011 Pending ( on the code reader)
P0021 Pending ( on the code reader)
does anybody know what it means when it says PENDING? does it mean that it's related? or does it mean that, that's the code waiting to come up after the one infront of it, is gone?

Pending means a fault has been noted but has not yet occurred regularly enough for the ECU to throw an SES light. On some codes, it has to occur multiple times for it to actually turn on the SES light. Not sure what parameters the ECU uses to determine how many faults it takes.

Maxx,
The thick hose to the left of the tranny dipstick was disconnected for me. However, my P0021 code re-appeared recently so I installed a new front bank cam shaft position sensor. The code came back pretty quickly, so now I think it's either the rear cam shaft sensor or the crank shaft sensor.
As always, if anyone has any suggestions, feel free to help =P
