2002 starting issue

I've an 02 SE, six speed, with 72K miles. Over the last few weeks, it isn't starting the way it used to.

It seemed to start almost when the first cylinder fired; now it cranks (very well) for a second or more before it starts. Sometimes I'll release the key too soon (6 years of habit from the very quick starts I'm used to) and it won't start. I think it has always started on the second attempt.

No check engine light, no problems at idle, takeoff, easy or hard acceleration, or highway cruise.

So, what do I check first? I'd prefer not to go to the dealer, since that's automatically $500 just to walk in the door (well, maybe not really, but it seems that way)

Check your battery grounds...but it definitely sounds like a starter to me. Go to a garage and have your starter tested before it totally dies and go from there.

Haven't happen to have had a new clutch put in recently, have you? Any work that lead up to this or a gradual decline into its current condition?

I will certainly check the battery grounds; that's something I can do, and costs nothing but a few moments.

However, I may not have been clear. The starter is turning the engine over just as strong as ever. The cranking is fine, it's the starting of the engine.

No recent work at all. (which reminds me; I do need to check the air filter)

Replaced the evaporative canister about 15 months ago. MAF about 2 years ago. I'd say it's been a gradual decline.

I'd also say that the decline hasn't been severe yet; I don't remember it ever failing to start on the second attempt. It's just that I'm used to it starting almost instantly.

My bet would be to replace the battery, especially if its over 3 years old. Mine just went and I had noticed it getting harder and harder to crank over a few months and then it just died. I doubt it will be a starter issue at just 72K, its unusual although like anything car related not unheard of.

Sorry I guess I misread what you typed.

I would have to see if I've replaced the battery (I think so, not certain)

However, the engine seems to be turning just fine (ie, rapidly, spinning, no problem) when the starter is engaged, it's just not firing immediately, like it used to.
