hello guys! its time for me to shop for a new brake system since my pads and rotors are almost gone. Today i came across this willwood big brake kit. So far i asked all my friends and they don't have any experience with this one. I would like to hear your opinion if its worth the money? any negative sides? Do they make any noise? what pads did you choose? (for a daily driver) Please post some feedback.

I'm not sure if that was the exact one you were planning to get, but it says it is for 89-99 Maximas.

you know there is a section of the org dedicated to braking and suspensions...
and on top of that there is this thing called THE SEARCH TOOL...i'm sure if you type willwood into it and search both the 5th gen and the advanced suspension and breaking areas you would come up with the answers you need...

just fyi, that setup's calipers don't come with dustboots to keep all the dirt/debris out of your piston/caliper bores. Unless you plan on cleaning them on a progressive maintenance schedule IMO they're only for track driven car owners that take their components apart on a regular schedule, for the best reliable service during racing events.

Irish knows his stuff and he has good reviews pros and cons and other people commenting about their set up. I believe theirs good info on that link.

 

I have them for about 3 years now, great braking power from those calipers. I also have the two piece rotors which i think you should go with because those one piece are too heavy

I have been talking to the guy for some time now, I'm trying to just get the calipers and brackets from him. I need to talk to him more about it, to see if I can knock down the price to a little less, but his price is very resonable so far. I am going to pair these calipers with a set of hawk HP+ pads and 13" carbon ceramic two piece rotors.

 

What size piston does the eBay seller give? I know Fastbrakes is 1.67 IIRC

 

That's a load of crap and nothing more than an oft-repeated myth spoken by people who've never actually used them. The tolerances are so tight there is no concern of debris passing the cylinder seals. I know dozens of people who use wilwoods year-round (including me) and have never heard about ANY problems from the lack of dustboots. EVER.

Sure, it's a good idea to spray them off with brake cleaner every once in a while to prevent excessive buildup, but I do that when I rotate my tires. Other than that and periodic fluid changes, they are maintenance-free for regular driving.

As to calipers using dustboots....you STILL have to maintain them as well. I've torn dustboots on many factory calipers. And when one gets torn, it actually TRAPS grime inside and forces it into the piston bore. OEM calipers have much "looser" tolerances between piston and bore compared to Wilwoods or other performance calipers, which is why they NEED dust boots.


anyhoo....cliffs: I completely disagree with your statement, which has no basis in fact IMO.

 

I would STRONGLY suggest not geting HP+ for a daily driver. That's a track pad that really needs heating up to be effective. Especially in the winter. For a street car, the HPS or Wilwood BP-10s (which perform similar to the HPS) are a much better choice.

(btw, I've used all three pads, so I'm speaking from experience.)

also, you might want to check if those 13" rotors will fit under your 16" track wheels with the caliper. MY 12.6" rotors don't have all that much clearance on my 18s, and even less on my 17s...

 

The 16s won't fit I know that, I was going to try and sell them. The 17s I have now will become track tires and i'm looking into either nismo 18s or g35 18s.

Thanks for the advice, the pads that are offered in that auction are the wilwood BP-10s and they are the 1.67 piston size. He gave me an awesome price for just the caliper and pads. Also the rotor size is going to be 324mm x 30mm, I am waiting for a quote back from stoptech about the carbon ceramic rotors, do you think I could fit the 32mm width rotor under the calipers?
