My maximas starting problem. very odd (pics and videos inside)

Hi guys i just got a maxima. its a 2000 and its stick. it has a starting problem, and i think its something minor. car only has 65k miles on it. There is a hose that was disconnected completely. i figured out where one end of it goes, but i cant figure out where the other end goes. here are two pics of the open end and connected end of the hose. where does this connect to? and could it be the reason why my car wont start right?

[img=http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/7505/img1948ua6.th.jpg]

also, i attached links of videos of my car starting. it never actuaoly starts right. sometimes it cranks and cranks but nothing happens, and sometimes it knocks really bad till it starts. but when it starts it runs beautifully. what can the problem be! its really embarrasing havign to start my car infront of people. lol

looks like a breather hose and by the looks of it it broke off does the car have the stock air box if so how many hoses are connected to it there should be 3. if thats not the case try starting the car covering the hose. if not all i can say is that it can be the starter my car used to do that and couple months later the starter completely died but it didn't happen all the time just once in a while.

That's the tranny vent hose and it has no relation to your hard starting issue. It is not connected to anything but is simply vented to ambient......so just clip it with the opening facing down. The crank time is excessive......was that a "cold" start or an engine "warm" start? It does appear to have a normal increased idle speed right after starting, which is a good sign. Does this still have the stock intake (I can only see the scoop)? The starter seems to be cranking the engine just fine......so I don't think that's the issue. Re the "knocking" before starting.......I don't know, but does the LOP light go out during one of these long cranking episodes? When the idle does stabilize is it a nice stable, about 750 RPM? Other than the tranny vent hose is there any other "loose", unconnected hoses?

-it was a warm start (does the same for cold starts as well)
- does have stock intake
-dont know what the lop light is so i dunno
- and yes after idle stabilizes it idels around 750.
- and no other loose connections.

Thanks!

If you "crack" the throttle open when cranking, does that help? LOP = low oil pressure light.

If you have a vacuum pot actuator on the TB, make sure that it's spring action is moving it's throttle stop in position for starting. Have you had a look at the throttle plate/TB bore and checked for excessive crud/scunge? A carefull cleaning of the TB might help.

If you put the key in the ignition turn the car on but not start it for about 10 seconds soes that improve the starting? Something else I would try is switching out the fuel relay. From the frequency of the motor it sounds like you have spark but no fuel.

if its fuel related.... put the car in the 2nd mode, and turn it off and do that about 3 or 4 times and see if it starts, and if it does start fine after that and still starts bad other times its a fuel problem

took it to the used car dealer i bought it from last week because its still under warranty. And they took it to a authorized Nissan dealer, and they said its a combination of the crank positioning sensor and low fuel pressure. All good though, its getting fixed and wont cost me!

Thanks guys!

spray some brake clean in intake and try to start it. if it starts fine then your fuel pump or filter need to be replaced.
crank sensor normally gives you a mil light.
So they will tell you they replaced the pump haha

the video of it knocking was because of the crank positioning sensor. And the video of it just cranking but not starting was because of low fuel pressure or something. So it got a new crank positioning sensor, and i think a new fuel pump to fix the pressure problem.

Hey guys, my max is doing the same thing as yours. Yours posts were all around August time frame. Since then has the problem reoccurred?
Mine has no SES lights on, but could it still be the Crank positioning sensor?
Should I look at that first, or the fuel pump. Any recommendation on how to check fuel pressure?
Could it just be a bad relay?, I figured as long as the car eventually does start (after lots of cranking) then the relay must be good or am I wrong here.

Just an update if anyone cares.. My 5th Gen Max was very hard to start up, relatively soon after I replaced my clutch. After replacing the starter, MAF, Plugs, Thermostat, cleaning off the starter ground spot I was completly confused, after all of this it ended up being a grounding issue on the engine. I added a secondary 10AWG cable from the bell housing to the engine and it solved all starting issues. I couldn't believe that a grounding issue would cause a hard start up. I had read about this but sort of blew it off because I didn't think there was any connection. If anyone has this same issue I would be more than happy to take pictures of the grounding locations.

I am having a similar issue, but I have a grounded kit (maybe something is loose, I'll check) but I would like to see your pics on the grounding locations. My issue might be the fuel pump. If I turn the key to position 2 and wait for the pressure to build, the car starts fine. Otherwise it's a long hard start (which happens when the car is hot or cold).

so this morning i am having a cold start issue, i have yet to run a DTC scan on it but wondering if anyone has heard of this.

it was a cold morning here in FL today, so i went out and was going to pull in the 2000 Maxima i just got , but when i turned the key it just kept cranking and cranking and cranking and cranking and cranking and cranking but no start???

starter was getting juice and sounded strong

after awhile trying to start it finally kicked in, i suspect a fuel issue since pushing on the accel. pedal seemed to make it start ...

will have to check my fuel pressure and scan for DTC's to be sure

i have starting issues too.

From my expierence, check starter to verify working, voltage from the battery. If you have a engine light on, try autozone for a free check.

2 years ago I had a starting problem. Somebody on a different site said check the fuel damper. I replaced the fuel damper and it went away. Then it started doing it again last year and replaced the fuel pressure regulator and haven't had a problem since.
