So, i have a stock exhaust system on my max. just learned that headers would be to expensive and wont pass emissions. So i was thinking id just get a y-pipe and catback exhaust?

The sound im looking for is a low deep growl. And a somewhat loud rumble when rpms are dropping. What combination of y-pipe and catback should i get for that sound.

Instead of telling you to search this beaten to death topic I will provide the link to the exhaust sound STICKY

http://forums.maxima.org/5th-generat...und-clips.html

And if you have a 3.5 skip the Y-pipe, not worth the $.

thanks guys. But all the y-pipe, header, and "test pipe" (have no clue what they are) combination's are confusing. And i guess the problem is i think that the sounds will be different with a combination of the different brands or whatever. And how some people use a catback system but swap the muffler and stuff like that. Ill continue to search. But if someone knows a good combination, please let me know..
Thanks

if you have an 01.....get a cattman y pipe, Meagan Racking catback......or you can opt for the magnaflow exhaust, or even the stock exhaust as the Meagan racing exhaust is a little louder than other members would like

That's the whole point. It is all personal preference and you are correct that everything sounds different based on components. You need to do your own research on what combos suit your needs and go from there, that's why the sound clips sticky and dyno sections exist. There is no one recommended combination.

Ok,i found what im looking for. This maxima sounds exactly how i was thinking. Its amazing.
and this guy has:

Hotshot headers
test pipe
2.5" catback
magnaflow resonator
obx muffler.

since i dont know too much about exhaust systems and what not. which of these would i need to achieve that sound. BTW i have a 2000 se. Id also like it to pass emissions too.
Thanks guys

Y-pipe and test pipe are the same thing.
Get a Catmman y-pipe and cat-back exhaust.

a "test Pipe" is a straight through resonated cat, you will not pass emissions if you have one.

You can pass emissions with headers and y-pipe and the catback is just about choice on sound really.

depends on what kind of testing, if they have a sniffer probably not.

y-pipe can pass emissions easy

headers can pass emissions just as long as you have an o2 sim and they don't see it. (also before you go to get it done you have the car warmed up, removal precats can cause a failure as well if engine is not warmed to idle temp)

you should be okay in both situations as long as you have a main cat. The test pipe is a pipe section that replaces the main cat with a resonated pipe.

so to keep everything seperate from the engine, these are the different sections:

1. Headers
2. Y-pipe
3. Cat
4. B-Pipe
5. axle section muffler

those are all the bolt in exhaust sections. what you choose to replace is all dependant on what you want.

So the stock muffler has a thing in it that opens and closes under pressure and can i change just the muffler to get some sound...I would like to have a little growl but i don't want to lose my power or tq or my best option is to leave the stock system...

No i don't want a Ypipe and i don't want my pipe bigger i just want a little sound without losing power....

What should i do???

If you just want sound then just get a catback or axleback muffler

If you want power then do headers or a y-pipe. Increasing pipe diameter from the 2.25" stock piping to 2.5" piping is a good thing, you won't lose power, you will gain HP and TQ.

I stand corrected...never knew the difference. From what I've read from people here on the .org, I always thought that a test pipe and y-pipe were the same. But now I know...to mymaxi41691: sorry for the face...I am an ignorant a-hole haha.

ha, its all good. I always thought a resonator and a test pipe where the same thing. or are they? i still don't know cause some people have test pipes and resonators.

A resonator is a part inside the exhaust tubing that helps to quiet down the exhaust. Exhausts without them are a lot louder.

Test pipe replaces the main catalytic converter. A resonator is a secondary muffler, usually between the main cat and the rear muffler. It helps keep your interior quiet. You do want one.

The test-pipes come resonated, but you do want another main resonator
