call Dave B and get a new one. 06 with HLSD is probably cheaper than you think. But it might take a few weeks as it is a rare item and may need back ordering. ( i had to wait two weeks)

I always use car-part.com to find used parts. Just remember, car-part.com has nothing to do with the salvage yard selling the part. All they do is list it.

The best bet is to get the VIN from the car they're salvaging and run a history report. That will tell you how many miles the car had when entering the salvage yard. There's really no way for the salvage yard to know how well the tranny works since the car will be brought to them wrecked and probably not driveable. I haven't heard of any other issues with the 6-speed trannys though so it should be OK.

If you shoot me a PM I can run a history report for you.

In 04 HLSD was an option. I don't think it was ever standard. They did away with HLSD around 06 or so.
PM me any time. I've had the tranny out of this car 5 times (it's a long story) and can walk you through it if your boy needs help.

I'm not sure about which are HLSD. All I know is that in 03 in Canada that any SE version came with HLSD stock if you bought 6mt. Later years I am not so sure about. Dave B would be the one who could tell you that. He would have a price for both if they were available. I posted dynos to shoe the difference in MPH for the newer final drive vs the older 03 final drive in your other thread.

BTY I'm not sure if Dave B answers pm's. Best bet is to give him a call
