New Belt squeaking: too tight or loose?!

Worked on the new alternator this weekend and got a new belt at the same time. Car seems to be running fine with new alternator and belt... Only problem is in the very first start up of the day, it squeaks damn loud for a short time and goes back to normal.

I had no means to really measure slack in the belt, so it could very likely be off. If the belt is making noise in the mornings, does that mean it is too tight or too loose?

Thanks in advance!

Squeal on start-up that disappears usually means the belt is too loose.

I have been having this same problem. I replaced my belt about 2 months ago. I have tightened the belt on several occasions. The noise will go away for 2-3 days; then it comes back. I figure that the belt should have already streched as much as it will with a new belt, but I can't get it to stop. Any suggestions?
