you can do the TCM replacement yourself as well as the selenoids.. but you need a true check up .... so your decision...

is there a check engine Light on, if so bring it to Autozone let them run it then get the sensors from nissan, or someone on the forum, my 03 max A/t was doing the same thing. ... It came to the point that it would just freely revand not go into gear, swapped out both sensors and did a flush, totally fixed the problem.... the A/T light still blinks when i start it but it is driving fine.

mine jerks between 2nd and 3rd, no revving problem just takes longer to shift than other gears.

dont rebuild your tranny over this. Mine does the same thing between 2nd and 3rd its just like maybe a half a second longer to shift then the rest of the gears. The stealer checked it out a while ago and said don't bother. your tranny will be fine

My 03 max has 133k I just got it don't kno if the tranny oil ever been changed but its kinda dark in color so I don't kno about changing it . I have a a/t what do u guys think I should do what signs should I look out for before my tranny can mess up with that oil since there's no promise its gonna be ok after I change the oil. I mean I've been feelin the car shift a little harder and heavier then before but I'm not sure don't want to think anything bad

You said your fluid is dark. If it's redish brown or brown, change it ASAP. Check out Lontar1's link above. If you're not brave enough to drop the pan, just do a fluid change.

well i dont know how true it is but I was told if your tranny fluid was never changed past 100,000 miles then leave it along. When I changed the tranny fluid things got worse. Went from a rough shift to a slip. Not sure if it was just a coincidense though

I am in the same boat, I have an '02 GLE with about 79k on it. My tranny has been slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear bad, especially when it's cold, even after warmed up. I did a transmission flush with Amsoil ATF a few months ago, and it seemed to make it worse. When it is in between shifting from 2nd to 3rd, not only is it very slow, but the RPMs spike up about 400 or 500 then drop back down once it gets into 3rd...definitely not good for the transmission. I was about to drop my car off at the stealership last week, but it warmed up outside and it wasn't shifting as bad. I am going to wait until it gets colder so that they can really see how bad it's slipping. Hopefully this is nothing too serious, and a new TCM or solenoids will fix the problem...

i'm probably eventually getting mine rebuilt. my fix was to let the car warm up to full temp(leave it running about 5min before i leave) and go very easy on it. Also if mine is still cooler i just take my foot off the gas right when it would shift and that avoids the slip. when the tranny slips it causes dangerous overheating withing the transmission and can cause greater damage. I've put about 1000 miles on my car since the slip started and so far what i;ve done is well preserving it.

I guess almost every auto maxima has this problem. it's not about maintainance.

Most likely a valve body problem if you have a cold temperature slip. Once the transmission warms up, the clearance/sticking issues goes away and it shifts properly. If it was the clutch packs going out, it would get progressively worse (day to day) and be worse the warmer the car got.

I am sure Nissan knows about this problem because in the FSM it says to perform testing with the transmission at full operating temperture. Sneaky way of not having to replace transmissions, eh?

Just take it easy, maybe lift a bit right before the first few 2-3 upshifts and you should be fine. I noticed soft shifts on the 2-3 when the car was cold when I bought my car and 28,000 miles later, I haven't noticed it getting any worse so it is something I will just live with.

Just wondering, does anyone think the dealership would actually come to the conclusion that a TCM would need to be replaced? Or do you think they would try to blame it on something else? Just wondering because I'm still under extended waranty and am hoping whatever the problem is, is covered.

Since I can't post a new thread, resurrecting this oldy.

My 2002 GLE is having the exact same issue. I live in Arizona and it just started cooling down (a bit), and in the mornings mainly my transmission slips from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Dealer replaced wiring harness of all things (and charged me $350) and this didn't solve it at all, the next morning the same thing happened. My Service Engine light turned on, and when I first start the A/T light turns on for a few seconds.

Now the dealer wants to charge me $650 to replace the TCM. It made no sense to me that temperature expansion issues would trigger something in the TCM.

Any ideas on how I should proceed? I'm thinking of just telling him to cancel TCM order and taking it somewhere else, but it seems like a sneaky problem and I haven't seen any definite solutions. Maybe I can just live with it and let up off the gas when it's about to shift from 2nd to 3rd gear, that seems to alleviate the issue.
