Timing advance question...

does the car need to be on or off when performing the timing advance?

my car was off

edit: as in motor not running but keyed on and engine at temp

I used autoenginuity and the car has to be running and at operating temperature. I'm pretty sure it has to be at operating temperature with the consult tool as well.
