How come a CAI is so much more effective on the altima SE-R?

I have read many posts and dyno runs that the nismo CAI adds 10-12whp to the altima SE-R, the altima has the same base hp rating as our cars... why do our cars not benefit as much from a CAI??

i find it hard to believe that a CAI would add 12 or even 10 hp on any car especially one that already puts down a pretty good amount of hp. Are these legit dyno numbers or just "marketing" dyno numbers.

Sometimes it depends on exactly how "cold air" it actually is.

I call BS. I dont think a CAI is going to add that much hp on anything less than a V8

Well for what its worth I also own a Chevy Colorado and the factory air intake is so damn restrictive that simply replacing it with a K&N FIPK or any real aftermarket intake or even a PVC pipe adds around 10 rwhp and its been dyno proven numerous times on the boards, and thats from an inline 5 cylinder 3.5 liter with 220hp rating.

Also when i attended UTI doing a simple cold air intake swap on a LT1 Camaro also gave us exactly 10.5 rwhp.

CAI's give great improvements on FI cars. STI's and EVO's benifit greatly from them.

its going to depend on which CAI for the max your talking about...

look at the design between the two..

SE-R goes behind the batt and down towards the wheel where it can grab some colder air...

max-(injen) comes alongside the engine and goes down in front of the radiator, where actually the air is prob the hottest due to the radiator. so its actually sucking up hot air and is possibly counter productive.. unless of corse you do the orgullo mod (link below) then you can get some better gains then the orig location of the injen cai.... hope this cleared things of for you... for me im happy with my WAI

I think the ECU has more aggresive programming than the Maxima, but as far as more WHP gain than a Max with the same CAI. I'm not sure about that...

Someone posted 9 whp gains with the GAB and K&N panel filter.

I've seen dyno pulls showing a max gain of 12 hp (at 4000 rpm) on an F22 Accord with an AEM cai. Peak hp was only about 5-6 more though.

It all depends on how restrictive the stock intake is. The Stock Altima intake must be worse than the stock Maxima intake. Seems pretty simple.

They are talking crank Hp first of all. Results posted on this board are generally whp numbers, and yes you can create more power using a cold air intake, a CAI is in theory fine.. people run into mixed results because of a less than perfect implementation of a sound idea.

you dont need to buy a cai btw you can make your own just as easily.
