Anyone else experienced hesitation while idling in Cold? '00/ '01
My '00 Max does some unusual hesitating in the mornings and through out the day when starting it after its been cooled down all the way.
It goes like this: Turn key, start car, Rpm's jump high as usual and then set at around 1300 to warm car up.... then about after 30 to 45 seconds, the rpm will drop to 1000 and start doing some eratic "up and down" hesitations. It'll go from 1000 to 1100 to 900 to 1000...
Has anyone else had this happen? My car has 147k,, symptoms of bad fuel pump or fuel filter possibly?
Wierd thing is, after the car is all warmed up, it won't do it.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Turns out it's the intake manifold gaskets.

If you ordered that set, it will not work for you.
That set is for the VQ30DE, 95-99
You have a DE-K. Sometimes the aftermarket isn't too swift on their model year breakdown.
Get it at the dealer. You only need the upper gasket anyhow.

how to
I just bought a Haynes manual for 5th gen. It has a decent explanation of how to romove the manifold. It was 20 at a bumper to bumper store.

Will a plenum gasket really solve this?
Check this post and the thread it's in.

What else should I be doing while I am in there?
What else could be causing the hesitation, which last for about one minute when air temps are below 42 consistantly, and do not reoccur once the car is warm. I have been talking to a nissan mechanic, and based on the po171 code I through this past sunday while it was hesitating, he is skeptical of the gasket theory. He says its a pretty thick gasket to be leaking. He is more suspicious of an o2 sensor.
What do you think?

Tell him to look at the thread above..... Tell him the thick gasket hes referring to was made out of plastic in 00 and 01.... The gasket he is looking at now is probably the new redesigned one. Just try it and see what happens.. Im going to be doing mine today or tomorrow ... hopefully the plenum isnt too difficult to remove.

I have an 01 and the upper intake manifold gasket is not plastic it is rubber.
I just replaced it this past weekend. Yes, after 167K miles the rubber becomes hard enough to be mistaken for plastic so did my rear vc gasket and spark plug seals.
After reading this thread, I went out and started up my maxima.. I do have to say.. I did not have the major fluctuation as the OP mentions but I had a very slight hesitation while idling and that has disappeared!

so, I am about ready to order the $4 plenum gasket and lift my manifold in an effort to rid myself of cold morning hesitation.

I have been having this same problem with my Maxima exactly as the other users have been reporting. I will try replacing my gasket and letting you know if it worked for me. Anyone know how long for the install?

Wow, What!?! 6 hours to take off the plenum or do what? Now im not sure which gaskets need to be replaced. The upper intake manifold gasket or the lower one? I could see how the lower one would take 6 hours, but the upper one ( looks like its just the plenum gasket) would take 1 or 2 hours
someone help us.
which gasket is the one that needs to be replaced!

Here is the link to the gasket I replaced: Click Here
Gasket part number: 14010A: It is the thin rubber gasket between the intake collector and actual intake manifold.
Click this to see the blow up picture and look for 14010A to see where it sits in the picture.
The 6 hours i say is for the entire job. As I mentioned I was really slow, taking my own time to do it Someone can definately do it faster... I wanted to be sure not fast.

UPDATE: Replaced the upper intake manifold gasket (some people call it the plenum gasket) and IT SOLVED THE MORNING HESITATION problem! Thanks to that other guy's thread and mechanic So all '00 and '01 owners with this cold morning problem, replace that gasket! (becareful not to let any pieces fall in when removing the old gasket!)

i own a 2000 GLE (125k miles), this is definitely has been and is a problem in colder weather. These posts are gonna help with that problem, at least
And in plano, to be serious...it's not exactly Chicago in December cold.

I've had this problem for over 2 years! Tried changing the MAF, no use, tried changing an oxygen sensor, no use. After reading this thread, I am willing to bet it's the upper intake manifold gasket as well. I would like to replace it myself, but after doing some research, the How-To guide I found was this:
http://forums.maxima.org/4th-generat...im-w-pics.html
...it seems like A LOT of work, and I don't know if the 4th gen applies to my 2000 I30t. I know a 5th gen would, but I couldn't find a How-To in the 5th gen forum. Do I really need to remove all that stuff just to change the gasket? I just need to lift the upper intake manifold high enough to remove the old gasket and slide a new one into place, right?
Sorry if I sound like a n00b, but any help would be appreciated.
