Those of you who have replaced the fuel filter inside the tank, do you think it's possible to completely eliminate the old filter under the fuel pump and just install a different kind of filter bolted down somewhere on the engine or the firewall? Everybody who has replaced it claims that the engine has better response, restored power and the knocking and pinging are gone but since it's in the tank almost nobody wants to bother with it. My car is an '02 SE.

I'm not sure about that...potentially you'd clog the housing and have to replace that without the filter attached. Replacing the filter in the 2002 is a snap. Don't let it intimidate you, took me about 30 min.

The fuel assembly housing won't fit any other filter. I am quite sure about it becoz when I replaced mine the clearances between the pump to the filter was tight.

The filter on the max is attached to the fuel pump, so if you were to put the filter somewhere else the pump would clog up. That's the point of the filter.

I just replaced the filter in my 03 last week and it was easy. Easier than most of the ones mounted on the firewall. Don't be discouraged, just do it. Once you get started you won't beleive how easy and straightfoward it is. I had to go back to the dealer and buy the large O-ring for the fuel pump since the original one stretched.

Rofl, id like to see you try to drive your car with less than 1/4 tank without the fuel sock. (filter looking device at the bottom of your pump assy.) Its not there just to filter.
