The Nissan tech said that sludge is causing a rattle only at 1900-2200rpm? lol....And that the fix is to change everything timing related?...lmao......ok, I so wish I went to mechanic's school cause they get paid like $70/hr to say crap like that to people...Best laugh i've had all night...thx...

Rattle, not pinging

I've got a similar sound coming around the same RPM. It sounds more like a rattle/buzzing. Like a piece of sheet metal vibrating at resonance. It never happens while in park or nuetral, only onder load. I checked my cat heatshield, and could not find anything wrong there. I have had the P0133 code come on 9 times over the last 20K miles. Maybe i should change it, and see if that eliminates the rattle.

It is not the cat because i have a test pipe and the noise is still there. It only happens when the weather is warm.

Not a wear issue

My Maxima has been making this sound since a couple of weeks off the lot after purchasing new in October 2001. I have never had the problem properly diagnosed, but I know that it is not related to sludge, low oil, or any other wear issue. The earlier post regarding multi-pot fuel injection is the most plausible explanation that I have heard.

Does anyone else get this rattle at higher RPMs? Like 2000-2500?

2003 Ping (Pre-Ignition)

I have 2003 Max SE with engine ping between 1800 and 2200 RPM. Of all the posts I think there are three that are possibilities for the problem.

1. MAF replacement
2. Inefficient cylinder head cooling
3. MPFI vs SFI

Has anyone investigated these possible causes more in depth? If so what was the result? How did you arrive at diagnosing the final solution?

Steve

Lift your hood and vsually inspect your heat shields from the manifold to the rear muffler! Does it sound like it's coming from the engine compartment or from under the car?

Maybe I am not listening hard enough but it has always been quite faint even when I do hear it.

I have an annoying driver side rear window wind noise too. Is there a way to fix it besides replacing all of the weather stripping? I figure its just one little piece that's causing a problem.

i have this on my 2k i30 too. i happens little pass 2k around 2.1k. its not coming from the engine its coming from under the car near the driver area. Also one of my heat shields fell off one time and i think after a while this sound started to happen.

i have the same problem it gets really annoying and makes the car seem like a piece of ****. i think its coming from some part of the exhaust. idk i cant pin point it myself. it cant be the oil, the car performs fine.

I have it but just deal with it. It's not that bad. 6 year old car not worth tearing apart to figure out what is causing it. My car runs awesome except for the rattling at low rpms

You can eliminate the "flooded"? valves & MPI theory. The system normally does operate with SFI. For engine starting and if it ever goes into "limp-home" mode, it operates in MPI mode. Right out of the FSM.

I just want to confirm with everyone else, that its not oil related. Wifes car has been doing this for a few weeks now...Oil level was low, needed an oil change anyways.
Drove it today after the oil change, and still the same issue. And its right around 1900rpms in 4th gear for me. I'm going to try a few things over the next month or so...if anything fixes it I will let everyone know.

I eliminated that rattle sound I was getting around 1800 to 2000 rpm. It turns out that it was a heatshield. The heatshield in question is just forward of the cat, above the flex hose connecting the headers to the cat. Once the mechanic put a clamp on it I have never heard the rattling again.

go earn your post somewhere else nOOb . On a more serious note: It is definetly not the oil level. Just put a k&n filter and synthetic and yeah sure enough still there. It does come from under the car for me....so im thinking that it might be the cat or the heatshields.
