my 2k1 AE got hit tonight

I got nailed on the left rear wheel at low speed by a driver coming out of a parking lot. I'm really ****ed. The wheel is badly scratched, the tire has chunks of rubber taken out of it, and the rear quarter panel is scratched and gouged.
To top it off the idiot wouldn't exchange info so I had to call the cops. So now I have a police report but don't know what good it will do.
I am hoping that the damage is just cosmetic.

How can I tell if something bad has happened to the rear suspension?

How much will it cost to replace the rim? I couldn't find prices anywhere online.

Where should I take my car for a good estimate on how much it will cost to fix? Nissan dealer? My insurance company? The other person's insurance company?

Why do people insist on driving into my nice car?

I got nailed about a month ago and the old lady's insurance is just now paying. A wheel for my '01 GLE is called an alloy type 2 and Nissan sales is for $385. It may not look "fixable" but mine was pretty bad but the body shop sends it out for $125 and it is refinished. Mine just went in today...curious to see what it looks like in a week.

I feel your pain My last car got nailed in a parking lot. Hit me so hard it broke the axel. Since it is a parking lot it is private property and the police can't charge anyone (atleast in state of Georgia) but having the police report is a very good thing. Give it to your insurance company and let them handle it. The guy who hit me his company had to pay since he was driving a company truck so I did not have to many problems although it took the body shop 3 friggin months to put my car back together. Sold it soon after and now have the Maxima that I LOVE. so it all works out in the end.

thanks

Thanks for all the advice and sympathy. Ya'll are why I love maxima.org.

The Nissan parts department quoted me $577.30 for a new rim. dang extra special fancy SE AE part.

I took the car for a drive this morning and it didn't fall apart. So I'm hoping I don't have to get the axle replaced. I'm definitely going to get it examined to see if there is anything wrong with the rear suspension or allignment.

I've got my insurance company pursuing a claim against the other insurance company.

The hour after I got my car back from the body shop I met this very nice officer who wrote me a ticket for 73 in a 40.

Sorry to hear.

$577 for a rim? Plunk down an extra $1500 and you have yourself a nice set of Volk rims (no tires).

Not alloy? What are they?

Hey, while you're at it...ordering AE rims and all, can you find out how much they weigh...since it will have to be shipped...it should be on the packaging somehow. I'm curious if the AE rim is lighter than the SE rim or if its just finished with that bronze tint stuff.

claim

The claim has been filed through my insurance company against the other insurance company.
The body shop estimates ~$700 to fix assuming no structural damage and rim can be repaired. This could go up from that estimate if the suspension has to be fixed or the rim needs to be replaced.
The body shop confirmed the $577.30 price for the rim.

I'll let you know what happens next.

my booboo

2 weeks ago i was on 45S in a construction zone and ended up hitting something doing 60mph. At first I thought I side swiped the barrier, but after pulling off the freeway and inspecting the damage, all it turned out to be was 3 busted rims. the driver side rims were the worst, front had a 3" hole in the side wall and the rim was split clean thru!! the LR had the sidewall skinned about 9" to the cords, and the RF had a couple of gouges. All in all, 3 new rims, 2 new rubbers, an alignment, and insurance paid $1900!! And get this, the shop that mousted the new rims/tires scratched all 3!! I am now waiting for 3 more new rims!!
