Is this causing the noise Im hearing in the transmission? Help

So the last few weeks I have had a clunking noise developing and slowly getting worse and worse until finally a few days ago it got so bad... Just to let you guys know I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima with a 2006 6-spd tranny with HLSD (only has about 3500-4500 miles on it).

-At first I heard something rattling around when clutch was out (only out), but when i pushed it back in it went away... wait don't jump to conclusions there is more.

-Second it started getting worse where I could slightly hear it when driving but was not very noticeable at all.

-Now it does it when it is just sitting there idling (the rattling sound) as well as driving. Sounds like pebbles rattling around inside transmission. My buddy and I pulled the tranny today it took us about 3 hours, and found that the throw out bearing is still good. Oh by the way whoever installed this tranny only put like 2 1/2 - 3 qrts of tranny fluid and it takes 4 1/2 quarts, not a sup0er big deal though.

- After taking a look at throw out bearing we saw that the TOB was good to go (still going to replace with OEM Nissan while it is open though). We inspected clutch disk while still mounted and it had excess play (2-3mm) where the input shaft mates to the clutch disc. So I believe this is the problem, input shaft bearing I HIGHLY doubt is bad with only a few thousand miles on the new tranny.

I am going to call Exedy tomorrow and see what they will do and also upgrade at the same time due to more power being installed this week after tranny problem is fixed. Anyway, sorry about the long write up, I have pics attached that will show you where the play is.. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks and wish me luck!

That's funny, who said that it takes 4.5 quarts? As a matter of fact, I'd love to see someone try to put that much in there.

Spec is 2 3/8, no more, no less.

It's actually rather hard to not get the right oil level; fill it up until it's level with the fill plug.

Odd that the splines on the clutch disc don't match up with the input shaft very well, though.

I didn't mention anything about a photo, an angle, or anything being 'off'.

Exactly what you said about there being play between the input shaft and the hub on the friction disc.

If you stick your finger inside that shaft on the clutch disc it kinda wobbles around in comparison to the rest of the assembly which is what leads me to believe that is the noise.. Because nothing on the clutch disc should move at all.. it should all be solid. And that center piece that the arrow is pointing to kinda can rock around with a tad of play.. but enough to make the noise I am hearing.

Should I check my input shaft bearing.. Like I said my TOB is good.. and the shaft coming out of tranny has no play which means the input shaft bearing is still good correct?

have you tried removing the pressure plate realigning the clutch and bolting the pressure plate back down again to see if there is still any play?
