High Beam Issue

Hi Guys,

My Passenger side High Beam isn't working. The bulb is fine (this is a Canadian car so the DRL use this bulb and come on). Since this bulb comes on for the DRL's I think the wiring harness is probably fine too. I've checked the fuses and they seem to be OK too. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mike

High beam and low bean (DRL) are two completely different filliments within the bulb.
Your high beam filliment is done.

Change the bulb and you should be good to go.

Have you tried switching the bulbs?

I have the same high beam issue as well.

I've changed the bulbs twice with two different brands with the same result. It's very weird.

The passenger side high beam will ALWAYS turn on if my hid's are off and I turn on the high beams.
However, turning on the high beams with the hid's on it's a hit or miss. Sometimes they'll turn on but most times they won't.

DRL are fine.

First thing I tried was new bulbs. I do not believe a 9005 has two filaments, as I understand it they just run them at 50% output for the DRLs.

I figure this has got to be a relay, but don't really know where to start.

Let me just get this straight. You have an I35 which has two bulbs per side (one for high beam, the other for low beam). DTRL runs the high beam at low wattage. Your problem is that despite the DTRL working, one of the bulbs high beam full power is not working.

Right?

Have you tried looking at the headlight control module? It's a whitish box near the washer fluid resevoir. One of the connections may have come loose.

My car is from Canada too, so it is outfitted with DTRLs, which I disabled.

Right?
You've got it right. So the wiring to the blub socket is likely OK...everything looks tight on the light control module you mentioned. I think I'm gonna have to start pulling and testing relays. I was hopeful someone had seen this before.

Similar problems have happened on 2k and 2k1 Maximas with the source being somethin malfuncting in the module. Did you take it apart and check the connections?

OK,

I think I've tracked down the problem. There seems to be pretty high impedance on the wire that connects terminal 5 on the RH Relay to Terminal 4 on the Day Time Light Control Unit. I guess I've got a wire break...or more likely a connector that isn't quite right. Any idea how to disassemble the DL CU connectors or the Relay Connectors? Should I just splice a new line in from connector to connector?

Still havn't tracked the problem down...I'm starting on the combination switch now...but I'm not sure if it makes sense that only one light would illuminate if the switch were bad...

Ideas?

I've pulled the module out...it doesn't seem easy to disassemble though? Any ideas?

Also (alternatively), are DTRLs important to you? My car came from Canada and I did not want the DTRLs on so I just pulled the respective fuse in the cabin.

If, by law, you need them don't try this but have you tried pulling the DTRL fuse?

I pulled the module out and noticed one bad looking joint. I don't have an iron here to fix it, but there seems to be continuity between the pad and the associated pin, so I'm not sure this is the issue. I'll give it a solder and let you know.

I had the same issue with my 01 max. I changed the headlight bulb for the passenger side twice still no high beam. So I took the car to my mechanic and after some test he told me it is my DRL module. I changed it about a year ago so far no problem.
