Sunroof Seal Replacement

I recently had to replace the seal on my sunroof because it had somehow gotten damaged and started leaking. It was a nightmare so here is my advice if anyone else has to do this.

Take your car to an auto-glass specialty repair shop and not a normal auto repair shop. If you don't know of one in your area you can call your local Nissan dealership service center and they will tell you who they use as most don't do their own glass work.

I had the seal partially removed from mine elsewhere only to be told that they could not get all the rubber from the old seal off the glass and that i would have to take it somewhere else. The rubber seal can fuse to the glass and metal frame making it very hard to remove. It also fits between the glass and frame in a very narrow hard to access space about 1/8" or less.

The glass specialty shop I went to was at least up front with me about the issues with the way the seals go in on the OEM sunroofs on at least my 2000 which was assembled in Japan. They were unable to get the remaining rubber out with any tools they had because the area was too small to get a normal pick in. Also they tried to split the glass from the frame (which is not recommended by them or Nissan and may just break the glass) they were ultimately not able to do this either.

I ended up having to get a new sunroof with seal on it. I bought mine from a salvage yard but the dealership also sells them.

So beware any repair shop claiming its a 5 minute repair and that you can just replace the seal. If you want to try and replace just the seal take it to an auto-glass specialty shop.
