Used Axles, what to look for?
Hey guys, I'll be swapping my axles soon because my boots are torn and it's just saving money to pick up from the wreckers. Besides looking for worn cracked cv boots how can you tell you are getting a decent axle? The local wrecker has a set so I'm wondering how I will know they are in better shape than what i have? I may rebuild the one from the wrecker, then remove mine and rebuild/sell them.
If the boots are good, chances are the joints are solid, so throw them in. If yours aren't making any noise on turns, after installing the used axles you can always take your time, clean, lube, and install new boots on your axles. The outer boot kits are @ $12.50 each from NAPA.
Just thought of something else. Does anyone know how to tell the difference between an axle from a HLSD tranny and an open differential? I tried to find part numbers but most sites only show the one option.
Well this is annoying. I drove quite a distance to the only wrecker in Canada that has the passenger side axle. I had emailed them for info but they were not forthcoming, I wanted mileage and condition so I decided to look with my own eyes. I get there and the guy says he wants me to pay up front then they will remove it from the vehicle. So I mention I just drove 65km to pick this up and I want to see it before I pay for it. Then he says it has a 4 month warranty. Ok but I don't want to pay 100CDN for this axle, get home and you tell me it is ****e, come back and get my money. Let me see it now. Finally the guy agrees and they take me out to the car on a golf cart.
I swear this Maxima hit a fricking brick wall at 200KPH. The engine is practically in the front seat. The shaft looks ok, but there are no wheels on the front, so the shaft is burried in gravel, the drivers side hub is torn from the vehicle making that axle completely useless. Then the guy says it has 150K KM on the axle. Waste of a fricking drive.
Now I have to find a set in the US without being able to look at them. I have to go to Niagara Falls this weeks but there is nothing even close to there on car-part.com.
aarrggghhh!!!

Just my .02 Axles are one item I'd never get used.
As someone already mentioned, if your's aren't making noise, just buy a boot kit, clean, regrease and reboot them. Not hard to do, but very messy.
Used axles - if there OE, they are getting up there in age. That means the boots don't have much time left. Not worth it to install used ones only to have the boots break open in a few months time. Boot kits are cheap, if you do decide to go with a used part, at leaset rebuild them before installing them in your vehicle.
