Unique Transponder Key Question...

OK guys,

I have 2 full sets of keys for my car, one master set and a spare set, but the cheap, plastic ring on ignition key on the extra set broke after years of use.

I, miraculously, haven't lost the key yet and I was wondering if I can just order a blank key, have it cut & remove the chip from the old key and put it in the new one, or is it possible to safely drill a hole in the corner of the key (near where the original plastic loop once was) without damaging the chip inside? I don't want to lose the key in the meantime, and I'm worried about damaging the chip and having to spend the $$ to get a new key.

As always, your input on this weird question will be greatly appreciated, and I'm sure when someone else experiences this problem, they'll be able to benefit from your immense knowledge.

Thanks In Advance!

Transferring the chip should be fine since the ECU already recognizes it. Getting a new chip will require programming.

OK...

So I get a new blank key & go have it cut from the original...

How do you get the transponder chip out of the key without damaging it?

When I get the new key, I'm going to tear the old key up & take pictures so you guys can see this whole process... I know I'm not the only one that's dealt with this issue.

Thanks for your suggestion!

Save yourself a lot of grief and simply drill another hole in the top of the old key. If you cut off the remnants of the plastic ring and shape it down nicely, there is still plenty of room to add another hole. It only needs to be big enough for the key ring to fit through. Bonus is that the remainder of the key under the plastic is brass, so the new hole should last a lifetime.
