bad balljoints?

I got this weird clicking/rattle noise when i go over bumps coming from the front end of my max, although when i apply the brakes the slightest bit it doesnt do it,my ball joint "boots" seem to be flat also, are they suppose to be this way and do i got a set of bad joints on my poor max?

Could be your ball joints, CV joints, wheel bearings.

Is the noise coming from both sides, or just one? If both sides it is likely your ball joints. If the ***** joints are really compressed or the rubber is cracking they are bad and need replacing. If you are going to replace the ball joints you pretty much have to replace the lower control arms.

Get it checked out by your local mechanic. Could be a lot of things.

However, I did replace my ball joints a couple weeks ago (not the whole control arm). The symptoms I had were a shaking steering wheel at 65 mph on the highway; a creaking sound when making slow right-hand turns; and a hissing sound front driver's side when going straight.

Got my mechanic to take a look under a hoist and found the driver's side ball joint was crumpled. Replaced both joints and all is good now.

Jacking up the front end and checking them would be your best bet instead of guessing at it!

good point. get the front wheels up and pull at them, if theres any play, its the ball joints. the wheels shouldnt move at all.

I replaced one of mine a year ago with MOOG - no drilling was required. I vaguely recall some problems fitting it in into control arm though. The shaft though was a direct fit, don't worry. Biggest PITA was wacking old one out of the control arm, I thought I was going to break it.
