Confused about SSIM..Spacers...block plate.

Okay I have a vq35 A/t maxima with basic bolt ons no headers.

I have been quite interested in the spacers and block plate since it is time to change the plugs.

Upon further investigation I am under the assumption that the only benefit from the block plate is if you perform surgery on the intake manifold (ssim)

Also I would love to gain the claimed 10hp and 12tq, but would this be achieved with the introduction of just spacers and the block plate... Or do I have to modify the IM??

I really looking for a review. Especially since Arron will be heading to South florida and I can purchase them from him during the "mini Meet"

thank you.

Honestly...the SSIM was probably one of the best mods I have done besides my headers/y-pipe. My car used to slowly lose power as it would get closer and closer to the fuel cut because of the flap closing which as a result was not allowing even flow of top/bottom of the shelf, well now the car pulls all the way to fuel cut with not hesitation at all and there is a nice big gain of power up top as well. There is some loss down low but since I'm 6MT I only have it in low RPM's once in 1st gear I don't know how much the A/T differ from the performance with the SSIM but I know it worked out great for me. Also do not just do the block plate either, the low-end loss is not worth the small gain up top that you won't even notice. But yes, you will get 10hp and 12tq out of the spacers alone, they are the best hp/dollar mod out right now and especially since your auto it will add the power right where you need it. Hope this helps and if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

Someone on the nissan board posted his dyno runs of stock, block off plate and SSIM and the block-off plate (without the SSIM) had the best powerband. The SSIM didn't pull past until after 6100 rpms and the block off plate made more power than the SSIM or stock from 3800 rpm (where stock was better) to 6100 rpm (where SSIM was better).

Does anyone know if there is a writeup on deleting the VIAS???

I searched VIAS Delete and got a couple hits but nothing useful for an 02-03.

Seems all links on the "Installation Instructions / How-To's / FAQ's / Product Reviews" thread are broke. So dont bust my ba**s for not searching please.

Here's what I got:

This is supposed to be a "definitive" thread for VIAS but goes to some Washington DC conversation about a meet.
"The Definitive Variable Intake (VIAS) power loss thread"
http://forums.maxima.org/washington-...ml#post1049699

This only describes putting JB welding in a "cup" for an 00-01:
"- VIAS Explanation and Fix For 2000-2001"
http://www.vqpower.com/v2/readarticle.php?article_id=21

This one is about HotShot headers:
"VIAS Explanation of Operation For 2000-2001"
http://forums.maxima.org/6th-generat...ml#post3615134

This one is some 4th of July thread:
"How To Tell If You're Having VIAS Problems (Variable Intake)"
http://forums.maxima.org/general-max...tml#post941534

Someone please help me out... I'd really love to do a VIAS Delete based on those numbers on the dyno that Scott linked to.

IMO the Vias block off plate and SSIM gives you more power up top with a major sacrifice of your everyday low and midrange torque! Unless you drive your car around town above 5.5K rpm I see it's use, for track cars primarily that really aren't driven as daily beaters! Again IMO...

bringing the thread from the dead... i plan on sending out my ECU hopefully this friday to TS, im considering doing this SSIM mod, was there any 1/4 time improvement?? i believe there was MPH improvement which i dont care too much about, but was there any noticable 1/4 ET improvement?

I would recommend the flash last. You should all your performance mods before the flash. I've had to send me ECU to them a couple of times. The second time, I converted my MAF back to stock and my AFR was jacked. Unless you've a way to tune AFR and timing.

Hustler, the TS flash on your 5.5 is only for the VQ configured with a manual transmission. Unless I'm mistaken on the TS requirements and your car, I think you're off target here.

http://www.technosquareinc.com/nissanflashlist.htm

You should contact TS for confirmation on those plans.

They used to flash autos as well. Not sure if they still do it.

make sure you get the z33 vtc map, especially if youre going ssim. my 6-spd with SSIM makes within 6% of peak torque from 2500 to almost 6000, and im pretty sure its all the z33 vtc map's fault

First of all, ignore any info for the 00/01 cars. The VIAS is different and not what we are talking about.

Removing it is really simple.
First, remove the vacuum line going to it and block it off. You can just fold it over and zip tie it.
Next, unbolt and remove the stock plate. It has the whole mechanism attachet to it inside the manifold.
Finally, reuse the gasket and bolt the blockoff plate in place.
That's all there is to it. You can keep the stock mechanism so you can return it to stock later if you want.

They should still do autos, I know at least two people who got it done to their ATs. And yes, get the Z33 CVTC maps if you are planning any sort of intake manifold mods.

So if I put in spacers, block off, h/y/i/E do I need a flash?

Will the car still run fine or like junk? What do they do to flash it?

The difference is torque, and lots of it on an SSIM

The stock A33B CVTC maps were for a dual stage intake manifold, ie. longer runners under 3600 rpms for more torque when the power valve is closed and effectively shortened runners over 3600 rpms for more high end when the power valve opens. So if you are going from a dual stage intake manifold (stock VQ35 with functioning power valve) to a single stage intake manifold (Z33, SSIM, Kinetix, stock with block plate, etc), you would do well to optimize the cam timing to get some of that torque loss from not having those longer runners under 3600 rpms.

It may be easier to decribe using a picture, so here's one for you to compare the Z33 cam angles vs. the A33B.

If you want the detailed explanation, see here:

If you're getting the Z33 maps, it will be an F-Spec ($500+), not an L-Spec ($350+).

HAHAHA! Me too, mist_max.

There are all kinds of people on this forum: Drivers, Gear Heads, and Posers. Most of us are just Drivers, who benefit immensely from the Gear Heads. And the Posers... well, someone has to buy those 22" chrome rims.

It takes a village to drive a Maxima. Um, yeah, I don't know what that means, but it sounds deep. Well, deep and dumb.

uppet:

Cliffs:

A33B CVTC + single stage IM = teh sux0r
Z33 CVTC + single stage IM = teh s3x0r

Better?

You need the Z33 CVTC to take full advantage of the IM. But yes, just talk to SR, he knows way more than I do.

LOL, Hustle I believe Jaypee does have the L-spec flash. I wonder if the F-spec flash would make a difference for him. His car is DUMB fast and only getting faster.

gotcha... looks like ima have to save a lil bit extra, i just wanted it before import vs domestics... so its not an option with the L-spec... datdude20 got the F-spec and didnt get the z33 maps... is it something you have to ask for??? or is it automatically included in the reflash???
